  1. I have VOB files from a DVD but it contains 6ch audio as opposed to the 2ch I'm used to converting (without problems). The issue is... when I go to Stream List and select MP3 for compression, none of the audio formats are listed (like 48kb/22000hz, etc.). I hit Show All Formats and it will show them, but the conversion will fail: "Error initializing audio stream compression: the requested conversion is not possible".

How do I use virtualdubmod (to convert a dvd file to xvid) when the audio has 6 channels ? Is this what demux is for ? I'm afraid of having to splice audio back into video.

As a secondary question - I tried to use DVD2AVI and it shows 7 tracks for audio - which one would be the one I want - I figure whichever comes out as center. I'd like to keep it to just 1 tool so if I can do it via virtualdubmod, that would be best. Thx.

  2. Install the AC3 ACM decompressor codec (see tools) and try VirtualDubMod again.

  3. unfortunately, that's a no-go. I already had the AC3 decompressor according to the stream list and even after uninstalling what I had and installing from the download link here, it still comes up with the same error. There's no listed format unless I hit Show All. After I select one from that list, it errors with the same message.

You should keep the audio as is (5.1 audio in an AVI is always cool, even if it takes some space!) Just reencode the video.

I'm doing this for use on a Palm (Treo) so it needs to be as small as possible. I got a 43min tv episode (from DVD filesize 1.7GB) to 28MB and it's good quality. I think less than 5% of that file is audio. I must compress audio to mono at the very least... especially for Palm.

Jeesh! 5.1 ac3 is out of the question then! You could try ripping the audio with DVD2AVI to 2 chan wav then encode to mp3 with CDEx?

  7. Should work OK? The only thing I can suggest is that you've picked up a DTS audio and not AC3 audio file?

If you are using DVD2AVI then why not decode the audio to 2 channel wav (an option in the Audio menu) instead of demuxing the AC3 (pick audio channel 1 if you're not sure - it's nearly always the one you want). You can just feed the wav into VDubMod as the audio stream.
