Anyone's help or comments please. Have any of you experienced operational problems with commerical video editing/authoring programs such as Pinnacle, Ulead, Adobe or the like AFTER installing SP2. I have avoided its install to date. Any common forum where these issue might be addressed here or elsewhere? Recommendations? Thx

SP2 was dubbed stable a few weeks ago. and sp2 more or less has to do with security from what i've read
-
I have Pinnacle and Ulead and both work fine with SP2. I have had no issues at all on my computer, any of them at work, or any that I have repaired with SP2. I'm guessing some of these problems were related to really old applications or custom applications that businesses had designed for their needs. I see no reason why the average user should be afraid to install SP2.

Recommendatiosn
1. Don't use windows update to install SP2. Download the full network install (275 MB) or order the CD from microsoft.
2. Before installing, make sure you have downloaded all the latest updates for your other software, and have them ready to install after SP2 goes on.Read my blog here.

Another good idea, but it is much much more work, is to make a Slipstreamed Windows XP Install CD with SP2 rolled into it, then to a fresh install. This also gets rid of the problem of spywayre f'ing up installation of SP2 over an existing install of XP or XP+SP1a. But as I said, much more work. Trust me, it's what I did (or had to do, some system files got hosed and I had no choice, and this was right before I had a chance to install SP2, so don't think SP2 did it).

Phlexor,
yeah but you know what, sp2 also caused me to reformat my system as the whole thing got f**ked about one day after it was instaled (although i noticed somethings after the instalation was done). Uninstaling it caused even more problems. In the end i had to reformat and i have not put on sp2 again -
If you really want to be safe I wouldn't install sp2. If you look through the forums you will see several threads of bad encounters with sp2. I'm not really in need of the security updates that come with sp2, so I'm going to hold off for now.

Never had any problems with SP2. Installed on four systems so far. I would recommend a clean install as it may interfere with systems that already have problems. XP then SP2 works good every time. XP+SP1, then SP2 is not a good way to go, IMO.

I made installation CD of Windows XP with integrated SP2 and installed it from scratch.
Thisi what I have on my computer with WinXP SP2:
Nero 6.6.0.1 Ultra
Vegas 5
DVD Architect 2
Sound Forge 7
Acid Pro 4
WaveLab Lite
SoundLaundry TerraTec Edition
LogicFun 4.8
CakeWalk Pro 9
DVD Maestro 2.5
Paint Shop Pro 9
Womble MPEG Video Wizard
TMPGEnc
and others.
Do not have a single problem. -
I have installed sp2 on about 8 computers with no problems.
What is up with the sp2 bashing lately?
People, it is not sp2's fault. -
hey Bazooka,
no idea but in my case, it 100% wrecked my pc and i had to end up reformatting (im on xp to begin with), but yeah i noticed it too -

my issues with it was that my firewall (sygate) started acting odd then it just would not load up anymore. Trying to reinstal the firewall (yes i had microsofts shut off) failed as well. (kept getting a microsoft error about the instaling said some microsoft files were corrupt), then the pc lost sound, despite it saying everything was ok. Trust me i tried a zillion things, finally i did an uninstal of sp2 and things got worse. SP2 also erased my previous restore points and made just a new one of when i instaled sp2. I ended up reformating, and things are fine (knock on wood) -
Wish I could say something nice about SP2, but I can't. Clean installed WinXP Pro with SP2 slipstreamed. Got several BSODs already, which I rarely had under Win2K Pro. Problems I have are:
Adobe Premiere Pro won't work.
Capture or recording sessions often crash.
I understand these might be driver-related problems, but I am still trying to figure it out. I have to blame it on SP2 and wait for some driver update... -

If your current install is working fine, why fix what isn't broke.
I installed SP2 on 2 machines. Both were old XP Pro installs. Wrecked both, and caused extreme malfunctions. Software problems and hardware problems. These were both aged installs that needed refreshing anyways, So I did a fresh install of XP Pro, then installed the IT version of SP2 as soon as the machine booted.
1 PC is fine, and still works fine. The other is a different story. I ended up doing yet another fresh install or XP Pro, and kept service pack 1, with out SP2 updates.
BUT....
Once I turn off all of the background services I don't want/need, and the eyecandy that I can't stand, my systems look, feel, and perform just like Windows 2000 -

It seems strange to me (and bazooka too for that matter), that out of the 9 fresh installs of WinXP with SP2 slipstreamed in that I've done, none seem to have had any problems whatsoever. A couple of minor tweaks required (ie. turning security center warnings off, etc etc) but apart from that, nothing, nada, zilch in terms of blue screens, devices refusing to function, etc etc. These 9 PCs have had a range of different brand parts in them, and a wide range of peripherals connected to them by USB or PCI-based.
Then I go to the upgrades. 103 workstations, all upgraded to SP2 individually using the 275MB adminstrator's package. We change our PCs every four years, and different people have different requirements so there's quite a range of different parts and peripherals in each. Same result, nothing, nada, zilch. No problems whatsoever.
Now I find it extremely hard to believe that we have just been extremely lucky to this point. While I don't discount that some people are obviously experiencing problems, I do wonder about the state of some of the machines that people here are using. It's almost like the Jah_Rankin/DVDShrink issue, where not many can believe what he's experiencing.
Perhaps just a note to self to all those both for and against SP2 to keep an open mind without resulting to any personal attacks or judgements
So I'm thinking that either I'm extremely lucky, or anyone with problems is extremly unlucky. I like to think the latter. The old adage does go "if it ain't broken, don't fix it", so maybe some people should just be happy with SP1 if they have any concerns. It probably isn't a bad idea to install SP2 during a fresh install either. I like to reformat my 3 machines roughly every 6 months. It's a pain in the ass to have to re-install and reconfigure everything, but I'm happy to go through two days of re-installing everything if it means my machines function immaculately for the other 181 days
Another old adage: "Your Mileage May Vary".If in doubt, Google it. -

For some SP2 works fine, for others it doesn't. To me anything that requires everything ALL hardware drivers to be up to date and spyware removed, and a multiplicity of small other things done before the install seems kind of strange. And even then it does not guarantee a functional install.

Is the TweakXP support forum for SP2.
Take your time and read as much of the forum as you can.
Then decide. -
hey Bazooka,
i never had microsofts firewall running to begin with, i always stuck with sygate. It was never on (yes i checked that a long time ago). Also my soun ddrivers were up to date. It wasnt just that the sound stopped, but checking the audio under control panel had the whole thing greyed out.
i see people talking about older vers of XP and having issues, this pc with the xp i have are from 2001 and i guess that may or may not have something to do with it. Either way i can/check updates that mircosoft adds and instal them (you know the high priotiyy/critical ones). So yeah in case it screws soemthing up again, im not putting on sp2 until i absolutely have a need to do so -

Another thing could be cheap crappy hardware. Old VIA chipsets come to mind. I have this old SuperSocket-7 board with an ALi chipset that is SOOOO tempremental it's not funny. The planets aligning could make this thing fall down. -

Hey Bazooka,
yeah micro fire wall was off. Also my sygate worked for about a day and then it stopped and all the main problems started. The whole thing was just a big mess, maybe at some point later on i wll try sp2 again when i dont have much on here, but at the moment, its a no go -
mazinz,
Did you download the full network update or let microsoft trickle the updates to you?
Maybe if you download the full network install, it might work. -
