How do I get the computer to stretch the screen resolution to fill the black area round the screen?? e.g in games and lower desktop resoltion.

did you try adjusting the horizontal and vertical on your monitor?

For games you can just adjust the res within the game to fit your current res, As reaper suggested the only way when you chanfge resolutions is by adjusting the horz. and vert on the monitor. You can do this through the menu directly on your monitor (should be a button to acces the menu on the front of the monitor, mine comes with a button that will auto center the display) or possibly on your advanced display settings for you graphics card.
