  1. Hello, Folks:

I'm a newbie when it comes to making VCDs and I have a couple of questions:

    1) Can you use DVD-R/Ws to make VCDs or just CD-R/Ws?

    2) Which program(s) do you recommend for converting AVI to MPEG, MPEG to VCD and AVI to VCD?

    Thanks,
    - Bodrey

A VCD must be on a CD (otherwise it wouldn't be a Video CD)...however, VCD video is DVD compliant. That means that you can make an mpeg using VCD resolution (352x240/288) and then author and burn it as a DVD. The major difference is that VCD audio is 44.1 KHz and DVD is 48 KHz. By using VCD resolution and bitrate you can get almost 7 hours on a DVD.

Avi to mpeg, I use TMPGEnc.
Mpeg to VCD, I use VCDEasy.
    Avi to VCD, see above.
Mpeg to DVD, I use TMPGEnc DVD Author.
