Hi all,
I've been trying to back up a DVD to a DVD-R but I can't seem to be able to do it. I've tried using DVDX Copy Platinum but when it comes to burning, it kicks out the DVD-R and tells me there's a burning error. I used the "simple" mode, as I have done before with success, but not now.![]()
I then used DVD Decrypter to transfer to my hard drive and then DVD Shrink to burn. DVD Shrink read it ok but when it came to burn, again no success. I have looked at the error log and I've copied the last part below and wonder if anybody can translete it for me into plain english!!![]()
I wonder, and this is just a hunch, if it has something to do with my burner? I'm using an Iomega (DVDRW4216IND-A) Dual burner -/+ R/RW. Now I know from reading many forums that this certainly isn't the burner of choice, but stuck with it I am. It used to work fine but I have recently upgraded the firmware for it to 1.21 but can't remember from where i.e., I think it was from the Iomega site rather than the hacked version available at herries?
Anyway, any assistance would be appreciated as I'm still fairly new to all of this & don't really know where to start to solve this problem.

I am not too knowledable about this stuff, but i noticed it said there was a power calibration error. Here is what nero's site says about that
"7. I get a 'Power Calibration Error'. Why?
Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder. Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). And during the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC). This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.
So, when you receive the "Power Calibration Error" or "Power Calibration Area full" error message, then the cause will be either poor media, poor Power, or a defective Recorder.
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:
1) A Firmware Update might enable the OPC on this medium
2) Try another brand of CDR or CDRW media.
3) Also try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If this occurs with an External recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. Take the recorder out of the external chassis, and connect it internal, as a test.
4) Try different configurations, such as taking the CDROM to the Primary IDE bus as Slave, and have only the recorder connected to the Secondary IDE bus as Master.
5) Send the recorder in for Service.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jed,
Thanks for that. I never even thought of looking at the Nero help! What you've said as possible solutions all make sense, especially the bit about the firmware.
However, I have just upgraded the firmware and I wonder if it's something to do with that as the last time I backed up a DVD, prior to upgrading the firmware, it worked fine. Also, today I backed up a PS2 game to a DVD (took me several attempts as it kept saying I was using the wrong media - until I figured out that I was trying to burn a CD-ROM ISO image onto a DVD! It should of course have been a DVD ISO image to a DVD!). Another thing I've learnt about backing up & burning!!
So this seems to suggest that the burner isn't faulty, neither is the media that I'm using as the DVD brand is the same as the one I tried to back up the DVD. It's all very strange.
The thing is I've tried using Nero, DVD Decrypter, Alcohol, DVDX Copy & DVD Shrink to back up the DVD - all to no avail. Perhaps there is some sort of new encryption on the DVD I'm trying to back up which none of the software has picked up on or can deal with?
What I think I'll try to do tomorrow is back up another DVD - perhaps one that I've done before to see what happens. Perhaps, in hindsight, I should have tried this already but sometimes you just can't see past the immediate problem!
I must think laterally, I must think laterally, I must think laterally, I must think............................................. .....
Thanks again.
Phil.
