  1. I have been recording TV programmes onto DVD-RWs and then using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink to edit and cut out any adverts easily and fairly quickly. Yesterday an error message kept occuring whenever I opened Shrink, something about a corrupt pre-fetch file. I thought all I had to do was re-install Shrink, but what I got was a different version, 3.2.0.15 ( and the same error message). The version I had was 3.2 and I thought it was the last and so the same as the one I had. But no. This one does not have the link to Decrypter, produces only VTS stuff (which Decrypter does not recognise) and does not recognise or produce ISOs or image files the way I am used to. I have tried to locate the earlier version of Shrink to restore the status quo, but can only find the 3.2.0.15. So I would be grateful for any advice. I know now I should have run CHKDSK first to eliminate the error message and the corrupt file. That was another learning process.

3.2.0.15 was the last official English version, and is the one you should be using. The prefetch area is \windows\prefetch\ and you can clear this any time you like.

How are you cutting out the adverts?

  4. You should have a look at the various guides to DVD Shrink on the www.videohelp.com site.
Basically to cut out adverts, I use the Reauthor function. This allows you not only to
cut out the ads, it also allows you to copy just the main movie and also to tidy up, eliminating any unwanted footage not only from the beginning and end of the DVD RW or R, but also during, which can be anything, not just adverts.
As I said this works for me and is less time consuming than using the edit function on the DVD recorder I have.

I know how you can set the start and end point in dvdshrink, so you can cut out unwanted sections from the beginning and end. But how do you cut out say 10 ad breaks in the middle? Reauthor the first part, then the 2nd part and so on and finally the 11th part?? That would be too cumbersome...

  6. As I said it works for me. On British commercial tv there are about 4 or 5, sometimes 6 edits to be made in a 90-min or 2 hour film or programme, and once you know what you are doing, it's not too cumbersome.

  7. Thank you for your reply, Gunslinger I persevered with the latest/last version of DVD Shrink and found what I needed in the drop down menu when pressing Backup. There under Select Backup Target was the link to Create ISO Image File with and without a link to DVD Decrypter! Great, I thought, problem solved, but not quite. If I choose, as I was doing, the option to create an ISO file for burning with Decrypter, when Decrypter appears, it fails to find Drive D which is the burner, refuses to be closed and restarted and I have to restart the PC. So now I have chosen to create just the ISO file, start Decrypter separately and that works fine (so far).
