  1. Just have a quick question about TDA.

I am trying to use TMPGEnc DVD Author to create a huge DVD, which I will then shrink to fit on one DVD using DVDShrink. I found that TMPGEnc DVD Author will write 9.15GB and then stop, complaining that it has hit the size limitation for DVD.

Is there any way to bypass this?

    Thanks very much,

    Cobra

  2. Yes and no. Should be several posts turn up with a search like "Tmpgenc DVD Author size limit" or such. Including several of mine
    try several searches like that.

I think the answer basically is no, about 9gigs is the limit for real and it stops or crashes, forget which now but I posted it before because I did it.

The way you can make your huge DVD is break it into less than 9gig chunks. Say combine your footage to 8gigs author it then shrink that to only 4 gigs. Take next 8 gigs make DVD and shrink that to 4 gigs. Combine the two shrunk 4gig dvds into one 8gig dvd then shrink that to 4 gigs.

If you have say 32gigs you want to shrink to fit one DVD R then author 8 gig chunks and shrink 4 times, add the first 2 for another 8 gigs and shrink, then add the last 2 for another 8 gigs and shrink. Then add those 2 for another 8 gigs and shrink. That should get you a 32 gig dvd onto a 4 gig disk just fine
However I am sure you would not like the quality very much when done :P

I have done about 12gigs or a little more I think, it was posted but I forget exactly now. Really not sure what my largest one has been. I have combined stuff this way several times for large projects, like 3 movies on a disk. Or two plus tons of bloopers. I mostly do original stuff. Not nesacarily good stuff, but at least it was original

Another thing is if your source file is like all one big capture like 16 gigs or 32 gigs( I have done this too), just find a good spot to cut that and make a starting point at the begining, geuss where about 8 gigs would be (like middle, 1/3, 1/4) and put the end point there. Cut all but the selection. Make that 8gig dvd. start again and open your file, put starting point where you stopped the last dvd and end point where you geuss about 8gigs would be again from that. Cut all but selection. Make that 8 gig DVD. when you have done this however many times to create all 8gig DVDs or less, start shrinking those to 4 gigs then start a new project. Again add them up to 8 gigs in the order they should be in and shrink back to 4 gigs as often as needed.

DON'T worry about menu's or chapters till you are making your very last 8gig DVD!

If your starting with one big capture file and breaking it down you can watch the frame numbers to know where your last cut was and where to start the next section. Since you would be opening the same file over and over, the numbers should help alot. When creating your final DVD, that is when you want to do all the menus and chapters and such. Although durring the sectioning into chunks would be a good time to cut out anything you don't want at all in the final DVD, that would save space and does not mater when you delete it. Any menus you make before the final DVD of course will be lost, so don't bother waisting the time unless you want to burn those chunks also like for a 4 disk set or something, then it would be ok.

You do know the second button, add dvd files (or somethng like that) will be what you use to add the dvds you have now authored and shrunk.
And silly to say, but just in case, you do not have to burn anything while doing any of this, just the final DVD you end up with when done.
Also it is good to use Power DVD to watch the DVDs you have created from the hard drive as you create them and after shrinking. Make sure they work and look ok to you.
It would be a shame to author and shrink for 3 days like that then when you finally have a 4 gig DVD you burn it and see it was a waist after the second shrink or so.

DVDshrink is a great program, but depending how gigantic a DVD you want to fit on that little disk, it can only do so much and still look decent you know!

  3. Oh by the way Cobra,
I am sure with your over 2000 posts I have mentioned ALOT of stuff you already know

But you know how newbies can be, and they read this stuff too

    Good luck

  4. overloaded_ide,

Thanks for the long reply - it looks like I will have to adapt my method a bit. I did have a quick search on the forums, but I was looking for the wrong criteria. I'll look harder next time...

It's a shame that there isn't a way to disable that "safety feature" in TDA.

Post count is directly proportional to knowledge, is it?

    Thanks again,

Wellllll, at least with that many posts a person has probly been told do a search a few times already

Just kidding, but when I typed that I had not seen your post count or name, and I am sure if your been here long enough to rack up that many posts then you have some knowledge and not a NEWBIE for sure

I miss tons of stuff with searches too!

  6. I was looking at some of the posts you made that day - you're quite an expert with TDA. I used it for the first time yesterday - I have been mainly concerned with creating VCDs and AVI files, audio editing and a lot of off-topic posting!

I am now getting ready to burn my first ever personally-authored DVD.

    Thanks again for the guidance,

    Cobra

I personally love TDA...except for the times when I feel the need to shove my fist through my monitor....like today...

9gigs huh?....I'll have to write that down.
