I used TMPGEnc Xpress 4.0 and tne XDVD profile to convert several video files into XDVD mpg files that totals to around 4GB for the filesize. However, when trying to create a DVD in DVD author with them, the filesize balloons to somewhere a little over 9GB. I don't know why it does this, considering the original file sizes of the MPGs are only 4GB. I am tempted to just drag the MPG files into Nero and hope my DVD player is smart enough to just play them straight off without needing to convert to VOB files.

TMPGEnc is just trying to make your DVD compliant. If you don't want that, try a different authoring program or turn off compliance if you can. I suspect Nero will try to do the same thing.

That's why I keep my copy of TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.5. It will create a fine XDVD with no problems.

I would suggest you place this question to TMGEnc developers as if one of their tools provides the profile, the other one should handle it.

I use TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6. The software produces DVD of almost the same size of the files I give it. For example, if I want to author 4 GB of video materials (vob or mpeg files), the software will author for me approximately 4 GB of DVD.

What is an XDVD, anyway? Is it something better than the regular DVD?

I am using the latest one I think. TMPGEnc DVD Author 3. I've tried to just ignore the warning, but it takes like 3-4+ hours to create a DVD now that used to only take 20 minutes. It is probably doing some kind of transcoding, I'm not sure. I've tried using a demo of the old nero vision express and it has the same problem, albeit the filesize comes out to be more like 6GB than 9GB.

TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 will re-encode the file to be compliant with the DVD standard. If you don't want compliant, as in a XDVD, use a different authoring program. But good luck on playback with many set top DVD players.

Why not stick to a standard format DVD and avoid all these problems?

A 'XDVD' would be defined as anything that doesn't comply with the DVD structure, format and specifications.

Oh...at a moment I thought XDVD designated DVD containing......,you know what!

I agree with redwudz. If XDVD does not improve anything and cause that much trouble, why not simplify your life and stick to the standard normal DVD.

I'm for everything that is normal.
