  1. Something bizarre just happened:

I went to move a file on my desktop titlesd DVD BACKUPS and when I put it in the new position it just vanished and the folder on my dock displayed a question mark. I tried in vain to open the alias but nothing. Then I did a search for some file names that I knew were in the folder and again nothing?

The only new BACK UP I did recently was the UNCUT KILL BILL R2 Japanese DVD. I just started to think that it may have some sort of application in that file which deletes BACK UPS of itself and surrounding files. I lost a few BACK UPS which I'm not worried about but there were loads ot other important bits and peices in there?

    Any ideas?

I have been using Panther for abou

The icon with question marks in the Dock thing you described happens when the file or folder you dragged there is no longer available. For example, if you dragged something from a mounted disk image or from a removable drive (like a FireWire HD or removable media), and then you disconnect or remove that media, or unmount the disk image, the OS is not going to be able to find it anymore until you remount the media in question.

  3. I know what you mean but these items were not from removable media. I just created some more alias and put them on my doc and they too do the same thing and erase the original file which is scary.

I thought this was a problem with my DVD back-ups but it seems to be a panther problem?

    I love MTR BTW : )

but scared of this new problem

So first, you make an alias, and then you drag the alias to the Dock? And it's the alias that gets deleted? This might just be a question of the Dock not liking aliases. What happens if you drag the original files you're making aliases of instead of the aliases themselves to the Dock?

  5. No, when it originally happened all I did was drag the original folder onto the dock to make a shor cut. It worked for a few months. Then yesterday I just moved the original folder on my desktop to another part of the desktop and it disapeared. This folder contained about 10 dvd Back ups. Then they just vanished? Then I noticd the folder on the dock of the same name had a question mark?

When I do a search for the items that I knew were in there they do not show up? and at least 50 GB has now apperaed free on my drive?

Hrm that don't sound good. I suppose youre quite sure you didnt drag the folder into the trash? That's right next to the only part of the dock which accepts folders ...

Otherwise all I can suggest is it may be a disk problem (hope for your sake it isnt). Try repairing permissions and fsck first, then perhaps diskwarrior.

    Good luck!

PS I wouldn't worry about any application on the kill bill dvd which is erasing your files. That would be extremely unlikely (and illegal).
