I have been experimenting with MPEG Streamclip over the last week or so.

My PC is Core 2 Extreme 2.93GHz, 6GB RAM, 2 x Radeon 2600 Pro and about 6TB of disk storage running Vista 32. My objective is to work with m2ts files that I have ripped from Blu-Ray disks using DVD FAB Platinum.

I believe that m2ts is a type of Mpeg 2 transport stream. However, I have read some suggestions that they can be Mpeg 4 based but I don't think that is right. Typically this means that the movie in 1920 x 1080p 32 bit resolution with six channel sound occupies a file of around 20 - 25 GB in size. What I've been hoping to do is to convert this to Mpeg 4, H.264, VC-1 or any other format that will retain full resolution and quality while minimising the file size and I can play back directly from my hard disk using WMP11, VLC, Cyberlink PowerDVD or, indeed, any media player.

Squared 5, the authors of MPEG Streamclip advise the use of Quicktime Alternative 1.81 but I caution against using teh download link suggested. It leads to one of these scam sites that says you will have free software for a year for just $40 then just tells you to download a Bittorrent client and search on the web! QT 1.81 is almost impossible to find and eventually I just upgraded my QT to Pro and paid for the Mpeg 2 plugin.

I then tried converting a 25GB m2ts file using both Mpeg 4 and 3ivx. In both instances the software seemed to race through the first 20 seconds or so of the movie almost in real time then either went completely "non-responding" or slowed to about 10 minutes per 1 second of movie time or stopped completely even if Task Manager said it was still running. I tried several using slight adjustments and sometimes found the program going "non-responsive" even in just loading the file. At no time did it seem to be overloading my system resources never seeming to consume more than about 75% of RAM and run both cores at about 75%. I tried closing every single other thing on my system down with no evident difference.

My next experiment has been to add four vob files from a backed up DVD of Hendrix' Rainbow Bridge and try to upscale this to 1280 x 720. This raced through the first 30 minutes of the movie in about real time but then took about 12 hours to do the next hour of the movie. I am presently on 1:30:35 (72%) and it has slowed to about four minutes per second of movie time. It seems to make no difference whatever else I do on my system although watching Task Manager it keeps on dropping in and out of "non-responding". I'm hanging on for grim death, hoping to avoid a restart and get to the bitter end and see what I've got!

I'm attaching a few screen shots which might be of interest and I'd be pleased to hear from anyone with any comments/suggestions.

You might consider checking the forums at http://www.doom9.net for advice on this. They've got some hardcore HD-DVD and BluRay people over there who do this kind of re-encode all the time. Few of us here at VideoHelp actually own BluRay and HD-DVD drives, so you might get more help checking out Doom9.

Amazin' Baldrick! TSRemux did exactly what I wanted in about 10 minutes and gave me a perfect 15.5 GB ts file (except I chose the wrong audio stream) which opened sweetly in Videoredo. Now I should be able to do anything I want with it!

Actually that should be thx to Roman V really. The m2ts was Mpeg2 and TSRemux gave me easy options. I shall try Megui as well and thx for the tip about Doom9 who I see have a forum specifically on getting Blu-Ray to hard disk.

Incidentally, Rainbow Bridge is now on 1:31:36, that's 1 min and 1 sec in approximately four hours!!!!!

How did you get this to work?

I've ripped to iso with PS3 and mounted the iso with Nero but DVD FAB has failed where AnyDVD has worked.

DVD FAB Platinum 4.0.1.4 beta or DVD FAB HD Decrypter do this sweetly, easily and quickly for me or, at least have done, on the seven Blu-Ray discs I've tried.
