  1. Hello,

I just downloaded an AVI file that will play back audio in Windows Media Player but not the video. I downloaded AVIcodec to see which codec I would need and it said under "V Codec Name = XviD Mpeg-4." Where can I get such a codec? What software do I use or download? Can anyone suggest a free codec? Hopefully, I have given you all the information you would need to answer my question.
Thank you so much for any help you can provide!

  4. Hi Gitreel,

Thank you for your quick response I have already read this guide and unfortunately, I'm still clueless. It says ,

"How to play AVI, DivX, XviD, MPEG4"

    in Windows
To play DivX, XviD (AVI) you first need to install the DivX codecs or the XviD Codecs (these are links). Then you should be able to play the video with Windows Media Player."

I clicked on the links: Xvid Codecs -- and was taken to the TOOLS section of this site. I promptly clicked on "Video Encoders" and here is where I'm stuck....

Which one will allow me to simply VIEW an AVI file rather than create one. I think I just need to convert the AVI file to an MPG that can be read by my Windows Media Player, correct? Thanks for any more advice you can give...

    Gratefully,
    M
