The thing is, its not the format itself that is causing you the problem, DVD-R and DVD+R are both perfectly good and reliable formats for DVD creation. There are many reasons why a coaster could be produced these include bad media, operator error, hardware problems/incompatabilities and software problems/incompatabilities, but blaming it on the format itself is not a valid argument. Like you alluded to, if there were a problem with the DVD-R format do you really think so many people would use it.

Update your firmware.
Your computer specs say ATC 4x4x40 DVDR drive. Is this a BTC?
BTC had really poor DVD-R support in early firmware, but over time it did develope a bit better.
The fact that the drive "spat back out" indicates a media/hardware problem. And ''error writing'' is a generic code given when using unsupported media.
Brand doesn't mean much, it's who made the disc for that brand. You could of bought 6 different brands, 4 made by Princo, and 2 made by DVSN, both of which are poorly supported by most drives.
If you bought a poor grade of media, and set the write speed to 4x, the drive may only support writing to 2x/1x with that media.
DVD+R is lucky, since it isn't as popular yet, there aren't as many OEMs yet. 90% of what is out there are made by higher quality OEMs. Just this year have most OEMs decided to think about including DVD+R on the production line, some are still on the fence trying to decide.
Ricoh and CMC make the bulk majority of DVD+R media, which by all accounts seems to be high quality stuff. DVD-R has 10-15++ different OEM makers with only 4-6 being high quality and a couple of middle grade stuff. Without doing any research, picking a high quality DVD-R media can be a crap shoot.
But if DVD+R is working for you so well, and you don't have playback problems, don't worry about it -

Which format holds more and is compatible with the most players?

Haters. 3.5 inch floppy fans represent!
This format war crap is so pointless. "my format is better than yours". Get this...for some people the other format works as well, if not better. -
The way I see it is....if it works for you, fine, bully for you and who really cares what format other people are using? It's not like either format stacks up compatibility-wise to a DVD-ROM. Anybody buying DVRr disc bootlegs is getting took, and most people selling stuff on DVDr are amateurs and rip-off artists.

For those who don't like "-" or "+" formats:
In Eastern Europe we are researching some new formats "*" and "/". Hope all of you should appreciate them! -
Jumbo_holden, nice tv you got there, + only he? Your high technical skills has convinced me that if a tech-guru as YOU have problem with -R then it MUST be bad. I will buy a +R tv set also and make a big fire with -R's in front of the parliament to demonstrate how insane it is that we are not using + only. -R is for commies and nazis, hope NATO will invade someone if this -R madness doesnt stop very soon.

Stas
I really like the sound of that '*' format - but I gotta say the '/' format sounds a bit dodgy!!! :P -
I bout my Microwave in Germany, it plays “*” and my Oven in Spain, Play “/”.
That is the neat part, this media can be play in any appliance. But, Then, I try to connect them using a USB cable and I end up with a Wendy’s Sandwich Region # 1
I want a region free with no pickles
Some Day I will….. -

You see? It was all so easy to understand. -
Very concise translation, though you forgot Phillips CD-I and 3DO Multiplayer among others.
