I agree changing the brand has helped although my friend has a liteon and his rewriter reads bulkpaq orange disks no problem and then again sometimes the disks i give him (i use infiniti) he gets the same problem as me oh well nothings ever easy is it?
-
Dont mess around with cheap disks, it's just not worth all the hassle.
Grab yourself some Riteks, they will make the world of difference.
Avoid overprints and you will be fine. -
I dont think Ritek are all that good 2 of my friends DVD players dont even read them so much for their special purple dye ive heard that Verbatim disks now use that dye so ill be avoiding them from now on.

so much for their special purple dye
(except the rewriteables and -ram).
What drive do you have? Try updating the firmware of your drive from the manufacturer's website, that usually helps.-Yar, matey!- -

Cheap and nasty disks get cheap and nasty results, but if you insist on using them, try burning a smaller set of files, say 4gb compression and you may have better results , as the cheapos generally give up towards the outer edge of the disk, where the dye is thin or patchy (95%-100%)

I had the same problem with a write failure at about the same point when using Memorex junk. I then tried TDK's that were made by TDK in Japan with the same results. I then tried Comp USA brand with the same result.
It may not be the media but something wrong or corrupt in the ripped file. At least that's what I think was my problem.

Heres one hopefully someone can answer ready? if you have a disk that plays fine in a standalone player and cant be copied using nero or smartripper or dvd shrink is there a program that can repair the corrupt files again now that would be the bizz

here we go again ..... :P "Which brand of blank is the best?" is like asking "What religion is the correct one?" or "What's better - DVD-R or DVD+R" You've got your Ritek camp, and your Maxell camp, and your Princo camp, etc., etc. Everybody has a physically different burner and there is drastic variation even within the same model number as far as laser power, focus, firmware rev., etc. And there are variables in the DVD blanks too. I've gotten batches with a 0% failure rate and ordered 100 a week later and gotten a 40% failure rate. Same brand media, same burner, different lot. There is no "right" or "wrong" blank for any given model.
Try several different brands that you consider affordable and when you find one that works, stick with it. Simple. And don't go telling everyone else you found the "perfect" brand because it might not be for his particular unit. Just be happy you found an inexpensive media that works reliably -
I totally agree kevin i believe theres no super brand out there it comes down 2 luck

can i just say one more thing when i download a movie and its on my hard disk it burns to a dvd with absolutely no problem but when that dvd is created i cant get a copy from it so do you think its definetely the media?

fahrenheit1,
Man, it sure sounds like bad media to me. Do you have access to another brand you can try a burn on?
Another thing ...this isn't something I thought of until it happened to me ... Do you have access to one of those CD laser lens cleaners - the kind with the brushes on the data side of the CD? I started getting errors like crazy once and a quick 30-second cleaning with one of those cleaners did the trick. -
If you're using Verbs m8, I would question whether it's your burner, that has the problem ..... maybe time to dust down your warranty.
If Verbs aint working .... then nothing much else will. -
Ill try the old cleaning trick Kev tried changing brand and reducing dvd with shrink still unsuccessful my burners only 3 mths old p.s. Phil what are Verbs?
-
Here we go with Nero again, maybe someday people will read and listen.
-
Verbs = Verbatims
I hear what you say about your burner being only 3 months old, but it seems to me that the disks it's producing (3 different brands) are unreadable in your PC. This can only be one of 2 things IMO .....
i.e. Bad Media or Bad Burns ...... as you have tried Verbatims and 2 other brands, which are Ritek & Princo respectively, your burner seems to be the problem. It may well be worth getting it checked out or maybe try fitting it in another PC to see if it behaves the same.
P.S.
If you are using the latest Nero, you can ignore the above post -
Ill try switching to another pc or ill change the ide cable and see if that makes a difference thanks

this forum is giving no answer to the problem just suggesting using different brand disks or checking your burner. I rip movies with DVDshrink save to hard disk these files play perfectly with powerdvd. when i use nero 5.5 to burn the same files to a disk the resultant disk will not play. when i encode downloaded films with tmpg and burn the the files with either dvd dit or with tmpg i get a succesful disk every time. this happens every time.
-
Well Neiltaxi u got exactly the same prob as me ive changed motherboard last night and still same old prob its almost impossible to get nero to verify the data correctly im beginning 2 think

this web site is a very good source of information but on this point no body has an answer. thunder in paradise says "maybe some day people will read and listen" read what.

There again, everybody's burner is different from everybody else's, and it's going to have a preference. The only thing that really works in finding a good brand is trial and error. -
I use DVDDecrypter - DVDShrink - Nero 6.0 to burn my disks (Riteks) and have not had a problem except with one movie. That being "Old School". Stutters after the first few chapters. But I think I'm gonna try it again burning at 2x instead. But every other movie I've done was fine burning with nero.
-
I think i got it guys i get the odd disk that i burn in nero and it comes up with a message burn process failed but the movies all there also i can get a copy from that disk too so im not all that worried now
thanks 2 everyone for their help with regards to my problem
cheers -

Why do you think all the Traders of "backups" spend the extra on Riteks and advertise their movies as being burnt on them.
I have been burning dvdr's for around 18 months now, on 3 different burners and gave up on the cheapo disks long ago. I, along with many other pros, prefer to use a quality disk, but if you are happy to use crap disks and tolerate all the hassel that goes with them .... that's your choice, but to suggest they are superior disks is definitely the biggest load of shite I've heard in a long time -
