My USB2 NEC ND1300a burned 3 perfect DVDs at 4x two days ago but then last night I tried to make a back up and my original DVD would not be recognized. Re booting did not help. Since I an running XP Home I restored to the previous check pount, still would not recognize my dvd or any other dvd nor would it wright to dvd. The drive does appear in Explorer and Device Manager reports it as active. It did however read and write to cd. I uninatalled the drive and reinstalled it with no success. I brought the drive with me to work and installed it on a win 2000Pro gateway and still would not read or write to dvd but can read and write to cd. Now I have to say that about 6 months ago I flashed it with firmware I downloaded from a media company to allow it to write to Optodisk 4x inkejet printable as recommended by them. I had a batch of off brand 4x disks that this drive would not eve recognize, but after flashing it worked perfectly on all disks I threw at it. I have probably burned about 500 disks most ryteks go4 and some other brand name media on it as I burn dvd of instructional hobby videos that I produce for sale.
I run XP home on a P4 2400 Mhs Gateway with 512 Mb DDR memory. Two 120gig h drives.
I can only assume that it is the drive as I could not get it to work at work either.
Any ideas as to why it has transformed itself from a DVD/RW+- to CD/RW?
    Thanks in advance!

Maybe its just Nero problem. Try this: Before you burn any DVD select the NEC1300a DVD burner drive to burn. If you press burn and is shown burn 4x .... then you are OK.

It's not that it has a problem with nero. It won't even open a dvd movie. If I stick a DVD of any kind in it, it's as if NO disk has been put it. A cd is another story. They seem to work ok, reading or writting. DVDs are simply not recognized. Guess I need a new one.

Have you tried another machine with a different OS, such as W98SE?

  5. NERO+ROXIO DIRECTCD BAAAAAAAADDDDDD My friend had the same problem after he installed nero. So if you have Roxio and Nero that could be the problem. For some reason thy try to use the same files.

No, don't have nor ever had roxio. Only use Nero. The problem is apparently hardware based. I now believe that the dvd reading/writting laser is shot as it will read and write to cds perfectly, but cannot recognise dvds at all. I read a couple of other threads on this very drive doing the same thing. When they die, they die. One minute they work, the next they don't.
Already replaced with a new one ( another make ) and all is perfect once again.
