    Hi there,

I am super new to this and i am in trouble....I just bought a Panasonic S43 DVD player tonight. IT will play regular DVD's fine, however when i try to play burnt ones, it goes black and wht and the picture is distorted and scrolls down the screen. I was reading the manual and it says it has "copy guard protection" that will cause it to do this. PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!! HOW DO I GET AROUND THIS?? I NEED REPLYS ASAP!!!

Burned DVDs don't have copy protection. Are you sure they are the same format as the commercial discs? It sounds similar to the problem you would have trying to play a PAL (European and others) disc on a NTSC (US and others) player. You can check the framerate of one of the discs with Gspot. PAL is 25 frames per second and NTSC is 29.97 or 23.976 fps.

I will move this thread to the DVD & Blu-ray Players Forum.

EDIT: I will also change your thread title to reflect your subject, also a part of our rules.

Alright. Now that we have the rules down, let's analyze the situation. Tell us about your burned DVDs. Did they come from Europe? If so, there may be a compatibility issue between PAL (European) and NTSC (North American) video systems. If not, were your recorded DVDs made in VR mode or Video mode? What was burned onto the discs? Were there DVD-compliant files like VOBs inside a VIDEO_TS folder? There are lots of other questions to ask. We also don't know how the discs were burned or what media was used. Enlighten us, and maybe we can diagnose the problem.

Make sure that what you are trying to play is for your region.

Also, standard advice around here (and for good reason!) is to use ImgBurn to burn with onto good quality discs and do not use sticky labels.

Although I don't think this is much of an issue like it use to be, it couldn't hurt to check to make sure your player is compatible with the type of DVDrs that you are using (DVD+r or DVD-R).

And as a side note - learn to be patient.

  11. This looks as simple as your burned DVDs were made from PAL sources be it downloads or copies of PAL DVDs.

On page 19 in the troubleshooting section of the manual at the bottom right it specifically says...

    "PAL discs cannot be played"

It seems this player is meant to be used with NTSC discs and TVs only.

    Gotta read that manual.

The black and white picture with distortion is EXACTLY what happens when a PAL video signal is sent to an NTSC TV. RowMan may be right, but it does seem to me that if the player really won't play PAL that it wouldn't send anything to the TV. My Toshiba HD DVD player states that it does not support PAL and even if I try to play a region free PAL DVD in it, it will refuse to play it with an error message saying that it's not supported.

The original poster could look at the setup menu of his DVD player and if he has a TV out option, change it to NTSC from whatever it's at now. That might solve this particular problem. It's possible that the player can try to play PAL discs if they are region free, but it just says that it won't play them at all to avoid problems with consumers who don't know anything about region codes and how to change the video output on their players.

It seems like the OP has a problem in general with reading. First he busts into the forum without reading the rules and cross posted seven times in order to then ask for help about a player that he didn't bother to read its manual. Another member had to read the manual for him and spoon feed the answer to him. I wonder how he drives.

The answer I originally gave was sort of the "Reader's Digest" version. The phrase, "PAL discs cannot be played" came from the troubleshooting section of the manual under the problem concerning "distorted playback." Earlier in the manual under "settings" there are no instructions on how to change the player's output format. I think the OP is stuck in this case.
