I used ATI MMC ("DVD medium" setting = 352x576 PAL; no videosoap) to capture a TV program and burned the resulting file with Nero 6.3.0.3 (NEC 2500A) on a DVD+RW.

When viewing on my Pioneer standalone DVD player (DVD+RW is OK according to comments on dvdrhelp.com), the screen is splitted in 2 parts : on 2/3 of the screen (left part) the image is OK in height but not in width (should be full screen !) and on the right side portion, I see a flickering partial image.

Thanks for tips on my problem.

(configuration : Windows XP; Radeon 64 Vivo with Catalyst 4.2 and MMC 8.9; file captured with MMC 8.7)

  2. Isn't that funny. I have almost the same problem. I converted two NTSC movies from svcd to dvd using svcd2dvd+. The conversion and burning to Maxell DVD+RW went fine. Playback on my Plextor DVD writer PC appears fine.
When I load the DVD+RW onto my standalone Pioneer DV343, the video appears only on the top left corner of the screen and the audio skips every 3 seconds.

Any one know if this was an encoding error or just that the Pioneer doesn't like the Maxell DVD+RW (it's supposed to be compatible)?

I also have no problem reading the DVD +RW on my PC.

From the little part I watch on my TV (more than 3 seconds !), I had no sound problem.

    I used a Verbatim DVD+RW 4x.

I suspect it's an error at the authoring stage. If you used Nero to author, try using some real authoring app like TMPGEnc DVD Author or DVD-Lab.

  5. I personally don't think it is Nero. I've had no problems burning DVD's onto DVD-R and having them display properly.
Sorry, but I was hoping that "guessing" wasn't going to come here, just someone who had the same problem and has a definitive answer.

My DVD player needs 720x576 resolution to work properly (is it the same with new DVD players ?). It cannot play correctly 352x576 DVD.

I found that in NeroVision Express 2, it is possible to specify a specific resolution (automatic by default). But setting 720x576 resolution (different bit rate are available) in the video options means hours of conversion if I want to use a 352x576 file.
So it's better to capture at 720x576 using a variable bit rate (I have chosen 5 Mb/s).

All dvd player will play 352x480/576 dvd compliant files (depending where you live)and tmpgenc dvd author and dvd-lab always make these files play properly, nero is know for many bugs with programs and mats.hogberg gave you good advice which you promptly brushed aside without considering it.

I didn't say I wouldn't consider using "TMPGEnc DVD Author" or "DVD Lab" (… any misunderstanding from my side in the replies ?).
Today I have the complete Nero 6 suite (but no other DVD authoring program), that's why it is quite natural for me to use it first.
But with my current experience with NeroVision Express 2, with these advices to use a better program and knowing that 352x480/576 dvd compliant files should be properly played on a standalone DVD player, I am going to try "TMPGEnc DVD Author".

I'll give you some more feedback soon… and thanks for insisting on good advices.

    Time for a bug report…

    …to Nero.

    I am IM-PRESS-ED (thanks to mats.hogberg and johns0) :
It works perfectly with TMPGEnc DVD Author from my 352x576 ATI dvd compliant capture !
