I've just captured my first movie using an ATI all-in-wonder 9000 Pro capture card using Pinnacle Studio 8. When I attempt to play back in the Studio 8 edit window, the screen is almost solid green but you can see the movie playing at a very small portion at the top. I get the same results when I play it back in real player.

    Any suggestions.

I had a very similar problem with a 'green' screen on the movies I produced in Studio 8.10. I found after many painful hours that the problem was the individual clip was not getting into the movie, somehow. I cannot explain why it is in the storyboard, but it never made it to the final movie. Sometimes I would have 2 or 3 clips doing this.

I found that the solution was to do this:

    click Edit Tab

make sure you are in 'StoryBoard View' (right side of screen 1/2 way down)

'double click' each clip (one at a time) so that the clip comes up in the 'clip trimming' window

Check that the clip is showing both the beginning and the end in the two windows.

If it is not showing in the windows, the clip is not really there.

I was rendering for a DVD but not burning the disk in Pinnacle (could never get Pinnacle to burn one successfully).

You can check to see if it fixed it after rendering by double-clicking the "VIDEO_TS.ISO" file in the directory where your rendered movie lies. The movie will play without having to burn a disk.

Check these steps, as you may be experiencing the same problems as I.

If you do not get the clips in the trimming windows, you might be able to delete that clip and try putting it back on the timeline and trimming it in the trimming windows. I did not use these windows in the beginning, and I think it cannot process the editing any other way.

    I hope this helps..

These analog clips were captured in ATI MMC 7.7, NTSC, MPEG2, 352X480, 48KHZ,MONO, 16 BIT AUDIO, 1P 1B, 6.0 MB/ SEC VIDEO. I am not sure which codec, as I cannot change them when capturing MPEG.

I used to edit each clip by just playing the clip and adjusting the start/ stop frame by frame on the story board line. This is where the problem originated. Double clicking the clip brings up the clip trimming window and lo and behold, the clip did not show any video in the two windows. Only after re-inserting the clip into the timeline did it show up in the trimming window. Once I do that, there is no more green screen in the ISO file after rendering.

Even though I have solved this problem, would I have better luck capturing in AVI?

I have a new Sony TRV 38 coming next week which I will undoubtedly be capturing the old vidoes w/ the 'Pass Through', which will be in AVI. Do you have a recommendation for the codec to use then?

  5. PS8 is not best at capturing in mpeg2. DV-AVI is much better for this software.

I am 'capturing' in ATI MMC 7.7. Is it still 'OK' to 'edit' the captured MPEG2 in S8? I have had pretty good luck doing it this way. Your statement is correct in my opinion about S8 not capturing the MPEG very well. I tried that first and was unimpressed w/ the quality. The MMC seems to do a great job at it.
    Thanks for the input.

  7. The thing is.... that if you capture mpeg2 and do any editing, it will re-encode, which means additional loss in quality. That is true in most of the editing software. Edit mpeg2 = re-encode.

    2 questions:

What size are you capturing in (320x240, etc.) for AVI and
    what audio rate?

I thought DVD's required 48kz, but capturing in AVI, the most I can get is 44.

  11. I am capturing from DV camcorder in DV-AVI (yes, I believe they call it "DV Video Encoder") which is more like "file copy" I don't recall setting any quality settings for that.

ATI MMC gives me those options.
I went to the setings in PS8 (latest patch) and I can set AVI capturing options there as well. I can set audio to the 48kz, and the size to 352x240, but I don't list the 'DV VIdeo encoder' codec there. There is a grayed out button for "List All Codecs", but I cannot use it for some reason.

Where are you selecting your codec in PS8?

If the movie you captured was a factory movie, then, what you are seeing
is the result of macrovision. I initially encountered this while using
my ati7500 card. Go to Lordsmurf,s site and look under ati de-macro.

    Best of Luck
