  1. I'm using CamStudio to capture my screen. I would like to capture it for somewhat smooth playback at 30fps, but mathematically my brain does not work.

How often should it capture frames? "Capture Frames Every ??? milliseconds"

  2. 30 fps = 33.333... milliseconds per frame (1000/30).

  3. Okay, that is what it set itself to if I used the "Auto Adjust", but it still looked a little choppy. I guess either my system is not fast enough for smooth capturing or it is an issue with CamStudio.

  4. 30 fps is a little jerky or flickery to start with. But you may have another problem: what is the refresh rate your monitor is set at? If it's not an integer multiple of 30 you will have a problem with judder. For example, if you're running at 75 fps and capturing at 30 fps you will be capturing frames at unequal intervals -- there won't be equal motion between frames. This will introduce a judder on top of the inherent jerkiness of 30 fps.

And, yes, your system may not be fast enough to capture 30 fps smoothly. Try using a lower resolution or capture only a portion of the screen -- at least as a test.

And please, capture with a fast lossless codec, such as Camstudio 1.0 .

Only later you should worry about choosing the "best" lossy codec for your video

("Microsoft Video 1" is definitely a big no-no).
