It seems i'll be hung for asking, but i've been using dvdxcopy gold, and what a nightmare!
It actually worked three or four times, but began crashing lately. but after uninstalling half of my computer (antivirus and such) and reinstalling the software a million times, i'm giving up. The last idea i have is to adjust the CS/master/slave setup.
Without loss of quality or compression, are there any success stories with other software for backing up movies?
DvdxcopyGold: $100 bucks down the toilet.

Since you used DVDXCOPY, I'll assume you don't mind splitting movies into many DVDs if it means using no compression.
There might be more complex ways and they might keep more data (menus and extras), but here is a simple way. Use DVDShrink to re-author only the main movie. In that mode, you can trim the beginning and the end of movies, so first perform a re-author from chapter 1 to the middle (or whatever you like) of the movie, then re-author again from the middle to the last chapter. Just make sure you do not select enough to bust the 4.3GB limit. Then burn the 2 sets of files and you have your movie on 2 DVDs without compression. (I've actually backed up LOTR Extended edition which is on 2 DVDs to 3 DVDs without compression and keeping the DTS soundtrack).
If you do not know DVDShrink, look for it in the tools section (it's free), read the guides, and come back to my suggestion. -
for an exact copy, you can use DVD Decrypter and make an .iso image - if it's a dvd-5.
for a dvd-9, since we don't have the burnable capacity yet, you have to compromise in some way - either splitting the content over two discs, or removing some content and / or compressing the content. DVD Shrink can help with all these options.
But depending on the content of the disc, you will take a quality hit - how much that matters depends on you.- housepig

If you wanting exact copies with nothing removed and good quality the only way to go is to use the Big 3 method talked about on doom9.org. WARNING it can be complicated to do because its NOT an all in one program and it takes a long time.

hey, thanks everybody.
I downloaded dvdshrink and will try it tonight. I dont mind splitting them up over 2 discs. But i'm glad to hear it can cut out extras and such. I am mostly concerned with the movie itself (and being perfect quality).
I was hoping there would be a way to do long movies like LOTR, thanks Lechtin. -
You can use DVDFAB For the same porpose. but it is not free as DVD srink

DVDDecrypter

So, I'm really most concerned with backup of movies to best quality that are rich in cinamatography; like Lord of the Rings. Movies like the Toxic Avenger, i could care less, and will compress to one disc.
But thanks again for all of your suggestions, you've set me in the right direction. -

There is also a misconsemption about quality. Just because you compress the movie by lets say 10% , that doesnt necessarily mean that you lost 10% of video quality. When dealing with Mpeg format, the original encoded data has a varible bitrate. Dark scenes dont take as much data as big bright scenes ect. Somewhere along the burning process ... the bitrates level out somewhat (I think they do this on purpose, they would have to) ... In the lower bitrate scenes its made larger so that the bitrate over the movie is more consistant (I would assume it has to do with maybe being easier on processors, and standalone players to play, with a consistant bitrate) ... when you run Deep analysis in DVD shrink ... this is what it looks for .... so if your worried about compression ... use shrink with DVD analysis .... and for just about every movie ... even if you go down to around 75% of original compression ... I doubt you will see a difference .... just make sure to dump out the uncecessary audio ...

Thanks scubasteve2365,
I'll give that some consideration while checking out the dvd analysis. What do you mean by dumping out the unecessary audio? The other languages?
Also, I was actually curious about this issue with movies like Batman or Underworld which are extraoridnarily dark throughout. -

-Jesse[/quote] in 20 to 25 hrs I did 16 dvd copies plus looked @ all of themI have 32 inch tv that I used a tweaking guide to caliberate and it gives me a sharp enough pic quality where i can tell good quality back ups. if u can afford to pay $4,000 to $12,000 for a 60 inch plasma, u sure can buy multiple copies of dvd titles,

One more time and this time I will be more specific.
1. All I need is DVDDecrypter to get movie from DVD to PC.
2. One of the following two guides from www.doom9.org (instructions, not additional sofware)
- 1 to 2 :Split a DVD to 2 DVD-Rs
- 1 to 1 :How to keep only the main movie of a DVD
3. IfoEdit that is used it these guides.
4. Nero or any DVD burning sofware.
As you can seeNo re-encoding, no 8h and finaly NO LOSS AT ALL and it is probably faster then any other method I would assume.
