  1. Alparysoft Lossless codec is released.

The techniques used by this filter allow to compress videos with compression coefficient 1.2 - 1.5 higher than HuffYUV.

All interested in independent testing are welcome to report results with references to public domain video resources.

    Huh?!?

Do you really think that for such a little increase of compression people would buy this product???
I guess not, because harddisks are becoming bigger and cheaper and so most people would prefer the free Huffyuv codec...

If all the software found on this site or doom9 should be payed for (eg. Virtualdub, Huffyuv, BeSweet or all other free software) most people on this forum would be totally broke!!!
Most people (at least I do) use these softwares just for home-made movies (DV-CAM -> editing -> encoding -> burn to DVD)... So i'm not willing to spend so much money for this!!! (My camera and PC were expensive enough)

Would anyone spend thousands of dollars for this???

    Thanks Svetlana,

I will try the software and let you know what I think about it!!! (but why is the lossless codec on the site stated as demo???)

By the way, how do you solve interlace problem while you view you video on Plazma TV or PC?
I don't have any problems with the interlace artifact, because I only edit footage on computer and then burn to DVD and watch on TV.
I want the result of DVD as near as DV-cam quality and de-interlacing would prevent this...

Ever heared of Progressive-scan DVD players and plasma screens??? (with these devices, you don't have any interlace artifacts!!!)

1.5 better than Huffyuv would allow me to use it instead of MJPEG on long captures. 2+ hours at Huffyuv is a LOT of disk space, and while drives are cheap, my main capture drive is only 80 GB.

I have no interlacing artifact problems, I know what I'm doing :P

  9. I tried the deinterlacing filter you have for Virtualdub (motion estimation, range 16). It seems to preserve a fair amount of quality while running slightly faster than Smart Deinterlace 2.7. Although I should mention that the clip i did the tests on was a VHS capture at 352x576 which didn't have a lot of interlacing artifacts to begin with. I haven't tried it on a clean source, such as DVD.

I wanted to test the codec but couldn't do so since I do my video capturing exclusively with Virtualdub, and Virtualdub can't detect the Alparysoft codecs in the format they're in.

  10. We are going to develop Alparysoft Lossless Video codec as freeware
product and its following enhancement will be connected with the professionals' and users' demands.
We are preparing 0.3 beta version with YV12 support for the beginning of August. In September we are going to introduce 1.3 beta with higher compression coefficient. At the end of October - release version which will be MMX and SSE optimized.

Your commnets about applications in which you use lossless codecs will be very useful.

  11. Hi,

I'd like to try this codec but which program will work with this codec? VirtualVCR (WDM), IuVCR (WDM) and VirtualDub (VFW) don't recognize this codec.

  12. Thank you for your comments.
Alparysoft Lossless Video Codec (its distribution package) contains player and codec. The player allows to compress video files of RGB24 and YUY2 formats (uncompressed AVI). This player also allows to view files in these formats as well as in Alparysoft compressed format. With help of this player you can estimate codec compression coefficient and its speed.

We believed that VFW format you mentioned is quite rarely used in video porcessing and is not in great demand. Currently we work under the speeding of the codec performance. Nevertheless, if we find that VFW is still popular, VFW support can be included into our development plans.

It's really interesting if VFW is popular for video compression.
    Good idea for a poll

  13. I'm just wondering, what's the use of this codec if you first have to capture in Raw Avi and then convert it to another codec? You certainly won't save disk space and that's why I use codecs like Huffyuv or Mjpeg.

Is anyone using this codec? Is this true?

Glad you raised this old topic. I tried to get the codec to work in capture mode but it won't yet. I'm really not interested in converting to this codec from a non-compressed source since for me it would be useless. As previous messages promised they have worked their version up to 1.5xxx and have both a vfw and wdm codec. Unfortunately you still can't capture with them yet.

I visited (but did not join yet) their small forum and found a question about that and they promise to have a new "realtime" codec early in the new year.

It would be something to try especially if their promise of even greater compression while maintaining "lossless" quality holds true and that the codec is also fast enough for capture.

They have a couple of vdub filters (deinterlace, denoise) which install with the codec that may be worth exploring.
