I used to use huffyuv or picvideo 3.
Now huffyuv crashes Media Player when used to encode a video.
Picvideo appears to create a jumpy video like when the field order is messed up.
I tried MSU which was horribly slow, but it crashes Media Player.
Lagalith was fast and over great compression but it crashes Media Player.
Are there any lossless codecs that work with Windows 7 / Vista Media Player?
Lannie
PS Or should I be using another video player?

I found Lagarith. How does it compare to picvideo and huffyuv?
On another side note: Has anyone ever used a ramdisk for a temp space for Virtualdub? Does it do any good or is it too small to be of any use?

Lagarith is lossless like HuffYUV. It takes more CPU power but delivers more compression. It may not work for video capture if you don't have a very fast system. It is multithreaded (HuffYUV isn't) so its performance deficit is less of a problem with multicore CPUs.
PicVideo's regular MJPEG is fast (about the same as speed as HuffYUV) but lossy. You can control how lossy it is. The more lossy you set it the more compression you get. At a setting of 20 (the highest quality) the compressed video is visually nearly identical to the source. But the files are nearly as large as HuffYUV so you might as well use HuffYUV. At 19 there is a little loss if visual quality but the compression is significantly better. I might use this as an intermediate file in a pinch. At lower settings the quality degrades and you might as well use MPEG instead which will give you better quality at the same file size.
Usually when filtering and/or encoding with VirtualDub your are CPU bound, not I/O bound. Using a ramdisk will not make much difference.
