My sources are avi or mpeg1. In the past I have always burnt them to VCDs. I am wondering if I convert them to DVDs, would I see significant improvement in the quality?
I thought that DVD would provide better quality than VCD but some people have told me that 'what goes in is what goes out', so I shouldn't get any better quality if my sources are not DVDs. Can someone please verify. Is it worth converting them to DVDs, or shall I strick to VCDs?
Thank you.

If your video source is better than VCD then you may try DVD or else it isn't that useful. Remember that you can also use vcd/svcd quality on a dvd, low resolution and low bitrate and you will fit several hours /dvd.
