Problems Burning with NERO

First I like to say how helpful people are on this board. You guys/gals have helped me get this far, but I am stuck again.

I have been looking through previous threads to try to solve my problem with no luck.

Here is the situation:

I first used the program DVDxCOPY Express to backup a couple of my DVD's with success (4 disks). I wanted more flexibility with my backups, so I downloaded DVDshrink and started using burning software NERO 6.0.0.23. I followed all of the steps given in the guides and I began to burn. The NERO program only starts writing the lead-in and then after about 6 minutes, it stops and tells me that I am using an illegal disk. This happened about 3 times. I then went back to DVDxCOPY Express and the same thing happened. It goes for about five minutes without writing anything and stops, I checked the log and it says:

writing failed(write error or process aborted)
Drive is not ready.

I first instinct tells me that the disks are junk, but I managed to burn 4 disks no problem with DVDxCOPY Express. So I am thinking that I may have messed up some configuration when installing new software.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers with no success.

Currently using NEC 1300a (OEM) with OPTOPLEX GOLD DVD-R 4x disks.

(Side Q? Am I able to update firmware with this drive, readme files say firmware is for retail and bulk, not for OEM)

Any help is greatly appreciated.
