    What is the best way to take an AVI file to the DivX format? Do I need to go through the entire DVD process first and then use a program like Fair Use to convert? Or is a program available that can convert the avi to the Mpeg4 avi?

    As long as you have the Divx codec installed you can load the avi file into Virtual Dub and have it do the conversion
