So here is the thing I've got an avi file with the following info as show by Media Coder:

This video obviously does not play on my standalone DVD/Divx player.
Now this file comes with an idx/sub pair. When I use media coder to render it into a supposedly normal avi file I get a file with these properties

    Code:
    General
    Complete name : H:\does_not_workavi

Interleave, duration : 2 ms (0.06 video frame)
Notice that the codec is FMP4 and not xvid which is what I chose. The duration is reduced to 2 minutes so the encoding wouldn't take long (it does not work either with the full length file). The subs, however appear just fine and I can see the file just fine in my pc, but when I try to use it in my player i get the very uninformative "unsupported format" error and I can't see the file.

If I encode the video with Format Factory:
    Code:
    General
    Complete name : 01ws.avi
    Format : AVI

This one works in my standalone dvd player but does not render the subs, so it's useless (The file gets processed but the subs just don't appear on the video).
If I try to use VirtualDubMod, when choosing the TextSub Filter I choose the .sub file, however the filter does not load it, I don't know why as It doesn't say anything, and the OK button in the dialog is never enabled.
    So I can't use VirtualDubMod.

Is there any, any way that I can turn this to a normal playble avi with the subs?

Thank you very much for any help.

  2. What stand-alone player do you have? I have Philips dvp 5990. I use AviAddXSubs to "embed" the idx/sub subtitles. First I use VobSubStrip to make sure there's only one language. The subs should go on and off with the subtitle button on your stand-alone. The only player I know that will show them on the PC is DivxPlayer.

The other consideration is most Divx DVD Players won't play DivxHD. The resolution has to be 720x576 or lower.

You can also try XVID4PSP and see what it can do. I play around with the settings to get what I want and got from there.
Also MPEG4 modifier may be the answer as well

    I have a BGH BD701X.

I can't use the program that you just said (I've tried) because it does nothing. I generate the new file and the new file just doesn't have the subs in them.

But just in case can you show me how you add them?

    Thanks.

MPEG4 Modifier does not seem to have any subtitling options...

As for the XVID4PSP I'll try it and see what I can get.

    XVID4PSP did the trick.

Now the final file has the subtitles and works on my player.

    Thank you very much!
