  1. Is this possible in DVD-Lab? I have some cool AVI video loops and would like to use them as an animated background behind motion menus (scene selection menus). Is this workable in DVD-Lab?

  3. Yes, this is possible with DVD-Lab. The company website has tutorials with this exact example. Check here: http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/tutorial/index.html

As far as TMPGENc DVD Author, I do not know.

check the feature list on the DVD Lab website - they have added more tools in the newer versions for making motion menus directly in the program.

if you have a program that will allow you to do video compositing (Adobe AfterEffects, Sony Vegas, or Zwei Stein [freeware] ) you can take your motion chapter clips and put them on top of your motion background, and render it all as one big mpeg, then use that as your motion menu, adding links and text with the authoring app.

I personally prefer this method, as a) it allows for more flexability and customization than the limited tools available in the authoring app, and b) looking at the instructions to do this directly in DVD Lab, it seems like you have to jump through a lot of hoops for the output you get.

as far as I know, TMPG DVD Author supports motion menus, but I don't know how good or robust it's creation tools are.
