Hey,
Okay I'll start out w/ the specs of my computer
P4 2Ghz
Winxp Pro
512MB DDR Ram
ATI All In Wonder 8500 128MB
Sound Blaster Audigy MP3
Sony DVDRW DRU 500A
Okay now that we got that out of the way... I am trying to convert VHS to DVD from my computer, If it works w/ this VHS im doing, I have to do these Hi 8 tapes. I have a Sharp HIFI VCR. I am trying to take my videos I made in high school and put them to dvd, jus so i dont lose it or n e thing and I can use it for my portfolio.
I know my video card captures and I know alot of you are going to recommend Virtual Dub. I jus have a couple other questions though. Do I necessarly have to use those programs? Is there other programs that do a way better job? Like does Adobe make one? Does someone make one that is good for industry standards. I want a program that is gonna give good captures. Also...I know we have to make it a AVI...Is there n e way I can make a file that doesnt have to be compressed to when I turn it to dvd, im not losing quality? I really wanna keep my quality :P
I dunno if im making sense, Ive read a couple of posts and instructions but I jus wanna make sure, I rather get it right the 1st time. I also hope "lordsmurf" responds to it, cause I've read his stuff and he definatley sounds like he knows what hes talkin about![]()
Thanks!!

You should probably head on over to LORDSMURF.COM
That is a website dedicated to capturing with an emphasis on using ATI AIW cards.
Please note that LORDSMURF is a big advocate for capturing direct to MPEG-2 but you will generally get better quality if you capture first to AVI and then convert to MPEG-2 using a software MPEG-2 encoder such as TMPGEnc or CCE or MainConcepts etc.

P.S.
The website is not 100% complete but LordSmurf keeps saying (for a while now) that his target completion date is October 24 so that is only a few days away now ..."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

ya i saw his site but i was wondering if there are n e other applications, like what about adobe encore?

I would seriously consider using ATI MMC for capturing. Especially if MPEG. Few other choices for AVI, but all AVI capture software acts about the same (if it works for you, that is).
For editing, Premiere, without a doubt. For audio editing, SoundForge, without a doubt.
Encore is an authoring package, and limited at that. I'm taking a liking to TMPGEnc DVD Author for its speed, and DVDit! PE is still my favorite for quality.
As far as resolutions, AVI vs MPEG, format, quality, interlace vs progressive, etc, etc... all the considerations for capturing... I spend a lot of time writing the capture guides at my site.
Side note: Maybe up to 4-5 pages won't be done by the weekend, but I'm trying to get on them. Most are complete, save editing and review. It's easy to lose interest in a site when you stare it at for so long. I need a day off, probably gonna take it tomorrow. Having some writers block. I'm still testing software for non-ATI MPEG capture, not finding anything I like yet, but I have a dozen or so e-mails with suggestions of what others do.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
