Hope I'm postin' in the right area... all support or advice would be welcomed on this one.

Recently purchased a Sony DRU-510A internal burner to Suit my Dell Dimension 4600 P4 2.4Ghz 1Gb Ram, 120Gb Hd. I Can read all media fine, even burn CDs, but had real dramas trying to use any DVD backup software.

To date I have tried DVD-Cloner 1.99, CopyAnyDVD, DVD to DVDR, DVD Copy Xpress and DVD FAb. All of these programs have successfully copy the master CD and then pull up error messages during the burn process.

I can successfully backup a ripped DVD by using DVD decoder and dragging onto blank formatted DVD disk, but obviously can't play on Pioneer DV344 Multizone home player.

I have tried uninstalling drive, every format of disk available and still no joy! So far out or all of my attempts have failed during the burn process.

I have returned the drive to the place of purchase with detailed information of the problem including shareware copies of software trialled. So far it's been 3 days and I'm still waiting for an answer.

I know the majority of people on this forum are from the US but is there anyone out there from Australia that has successfully backed up their purchased DVD's using any of the software listed above?

    Thanks in advance,

    Rubes.

  2. Save yourself a lot of pain and just download and use DVDshrink, besides doing a wonderful job it's free. So use DVDshrink putting the generated files into a VIDEO_TS folder then burn that folder with Nero or RecordNow Max (works every time).

  3. also, make sure that you have the latest firmware for your drive. go to sony and download the 1.0d firware. also, download their drive speed selector program which lets you get past the 2x read limit sony puts on the drive.

    hope this helps a little

    Bob,

Thanks for the suggestion... have actually used DVD Shrink. It worked fine. The burn process is the problem. I have RecordNow which came with my Sony drive but it won't touch anything with copyright restrictions even after using DVDShrink or DVD Decrypter.

    Cheers,

I think RecordNow DX should be renamed CoasterNow. I have the Sony external DRX-510UL. I can't figure out why they bundled it with such hit or miss software! I'm trying to solve some of the same burning questions. Try MovieGeek's suggestion and "update RecordNow DX to 4.6 or 4.61,try this engine update first: http://support.sonic.com/downloads/engine.asp"

oh hey, the latest firmware upgrade 1.0D for the burner from Sony:

'cause you can have alot of RAM and Hard drive but it's the firmware that counts.

Tried the firmware upgrade but no joy. Still indicates the 1.0c on the drive details. Message indicates that I needed to restart before I could perform the update but even after a restart it just asked for another restart?

    Am i missin' somethin!

Take that back... firmware upgraded fine. After getting my drive back I was able to create a backup DVD using DVD CopyXpress however my Pioneer DV344 wasn't able to read the backup.

Was using DVD Decrypter to rip to hard drive and then DVD CopyXpress to burn to DVD. Seemed to put files into a temp folder on the DVD. I must have missed a step.

I still agree with Bob W., DVD Shrink rocks. I use it all the time. I think Sony let us all down with their software bundle. So, are you using compatible media with the burner? Is the media compatible with your stand alone DVD player? Are the stars in the proper alignment?
Check out the following link for media compatibility: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/mediainfo_gb_na0305232.html

Hey, did you check/set the region code on your burner? DVD Shrink will make your backups region free or what ever you want. Maybe your stand alone is picky.

With RecordNow DX try a few things, like try to reduce the recording speed. Nothing like a good slow burn!

Stop other application during recording. Then the PC will be able to supply sufficient resources for recording work. Sometimes even the screen saver influences recording work. And the error can appear if energy saving measures or Powersaving routines are activated. Please deactivate all such routines.

Try to change the place of Temporary Folder of RecordNowDX. As the default setting, the temporary folder is in the C drive(the drive which RecordNowDX is installed). If you have another drive( partition) which has enough free space, you can set the temporary folder in that drive.

Try defragging the hard disk before recording. Any HDD, after running applications for a while, becomes fragmented.

If the source files are not on the local hard disk, copy the files onto local hard disk drive, then record the files from hard disk to DVD-R -/+ disc.

Use RWs! Though my burner ironically will never coaster on a RW, it will coaster sometimes on a DVD-R using the 'make another" option.

Pray or send your burner warm fuzzy thoughts of success. Visualize a playable DVD -/+ R disc. :P

Thanks for the tips. Actually downloaded a trial version of Nero 6. Very happy with it. Will look at buying in the near future... worth every cent. Been fine with the burns. Only issues have been with DVD-R and a brand called Laser. Works on fine on the + and RW + & -.

Pioneer DV344 Stand alone player even played + and RW+ which the booklet said it wasn't able to play... work that one out.

    Take it easy,
