    Hi
When converting a divx/xvid to DVD Pal 720 x 576 how do u guys work out the aspect ratio??

    e.g. 608 x 256 .... what would the new scale be?? 720 x ???

    I figured 720 divided by 608 multiplied by 256 which would be 720 x 303

But this creates a video narrower than the original .. any ideas?

Has anyone developed a formula for working this out so that they remain the correct aspect ratio??

Please don't recommend using a script I want to do it from within the program.

    Cheers

The storage aspect ratio in a MPEG2 file has nothing to do with
    the DisplayAspectRatio. 720 x 576 could be 4:3 or 16:9

You need to determine what the original is SUPPOSED to look
like. It it really 2.375:1 ?

Then you will have probably letterbox it and re-encode.

Find DJRumpys' Guide. That explains lots.

I add black bars and make it true 4:3 using 352x480. Yeah, I lower quality a little trimming down high-resolution source. But it was a download after all (normally movie trailers).

I have MC 1.4 in demo mode right now for testing, but I'd just as quickly use TMPGEnc for this kind of conversion project.

Divx/Xvid is almost always made with square pixel format, so I suggest using FitCD and set source to 1:1 pixels and calculate a resizing to be used on DVD. Mainconcept 1.4 can open avisynth scripts without problems, just choose all file types when opening and select the avs.
