I've never gotten it to work.Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side. -
Two options
1. Buy double sided DVD-R's and copy each side as you would 2 seperate movies with DVDShrink or wantever s/w you prefer. That way you preserve the menu's, extras etc.
2. If you just want the movie. Use DVDDecryper to rip the movies (Main Movie only). Re-encode (with TMPEnc ot REMPEG) to drop the bit rate. Edit / Join, Author and burn.
If you want to copy both sides to a single sided DVD-R it will depend on how its put together. I think you'll find its not worth the effort -
Not to slam on you or anything but it's amazing how many times this question gets asked. I'll bet this question gets asked once a week.
As a relative newbie, I have done this 3 or 4 times. Perfectly 3 times, once skipping to different chapters did not work.
Just search this site. Start making clips of posts and go to links.
You will end up taking just the vobs of one side, renaming the vobs on the other side to be consectutive with the first, creating new ifos (ifoedit), shrinking.
If you want, let me know where to email my jottings to; just a word doc with clips of posts from this site.
This site is great. With 0 creative thought of your own, just doing what others have posted, you can do almost anything. -
My first try involved ripping all the vob's and renaming them in sequence. I ran IfoEdit and had it create ifo files. Then I ran it through dvd2one to transcode the vob's. But when I went to play it, as I skipped chapters I moved all around the movie the first part of the movie was fine but I went to the end of the movie and it was playing the middle.
Am I missing something here or should I just retry what I have done already?
The movie Seven has 8 vob file total. The first side has 3.5 gigs worth and the second sided has 3.5 gigs worth of vob files. Is Ifoedit getting confused when It creates the new ifo's? -
Good thing I saved this as I seem to be posting it every week. Here is how I do it.
1: Rip both sides with SmartRipper to a single folder (all the files in one folder). Since the main movie on the second side may have VOB files with the same file names as the first side you will first need to put these into another temp folder then re-name them starting where the first side left off then move the files into the combined folder.
2: Delete all the files in the folder except the main VOB files for both sides.
3: Rename all the VOB files in order starting with VTS_01_001 then VTS_01_002 an so on.
4: Use VOBEdit to "Join" the files.
5: Use IFOEdit on the joined files to "create new IFO's".
6: Use IFOEdit to "get VTS sectors" on the files created above.
7: Use DVD2one or DVDshrink to compress the files in step 6 to a VIDEO_TS folder (you create this) so they will fit on a single DVDR.
8: Test the resulting files with PowerDVD or WinDVD prior to burning.
9: Burn The VIDEO_TS folder to DVD (I use RecordNow Max burning software for this).
10: Enjoy.
SmartRipper, VOBEdit, and IFOEdit all all free so look in the tools section to get same. You can get some tips on using VOB and IFO edit here.

Hi Bob --- tried your method on "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" yesterday, and it puked out on DVD2One, DVD Shrink v.1.3, and CloneDVD. The problem occurs when the program gets to the set of VOBs from side B, even though they have been renamed in sequence and tidied up with IfoEdit and VOBEdit. It may be something peculiar with Robin Hood, though. I'm having DVD2DVDR have a crack at the files right now, and when I get home tonight I'll check it out and let you know..."I'm sick of paying for dinner and being served cowshit, while they give the bums eating out of the garbage my meal."

I tried what your suggested Bob W and I got the same results as I stated above. The ifo files that were created are messed up. When the movie is played it jumps all around. The end of the movies is in the middle. The beginning is at the beginning. The middle of the movie is at the end. What is up with this?
VOODOO_child I will try your suggestion and see what happens. Thanks -

I searched under goodfellas like you suggested and I found a link to this site:

It worked great. Thanks Voodoo Child. Bob W left out some things and added a step that wasn't necessary. -
as bob w post his method once or twice a a week, so do i
rip the main movie vobs from both discs to the harddrive in one folder
name the folder after the movie
rename the vobs
vts_01_1,vts_01_2,vts_01_3,vts_01_4,vts_01_5,vts_0 1_6,vts_01_7, vts_01_8,
open ifoedit
select create ifo and navigate to the first vob and click on
make sure u check the "same as source" option
wait 5 to 10 min for your new ifo file
and then select get vts sectors as it correct all of the ifo and bup files
make sure u anwer yes to everything.
then use your favorite encoding dvd burning program
dvd shrink, instant copy, dvd2one, etc.
come to think about it
i think that i will post this as a guide
since it is ask so much -
I've tried this twice with my flipper of "Seven" but chapter 20 (the last of side A) keeps skipping to Chapter 40 or 41 (the credits of Side B)
I can't figure what I'm doing wrong. I've even done the step in VobEdit where I seek out the last nav packet of Side A and make the first nav packet of side B the next increment up. I've done the "get VTS sectors" which inevitably corrects a few things. Still no luck. -
1) Rip Movie A to a Folder using DVD Decrypter
2) Rip Movie B to a Folder using DVD Decrypter
3) Import both movie sets into Tmpgenc DVD Author.
4) Export from Tmpgenc DVD Author to a New Folder
5) Shrink with DVD2ONE. (DVDShrink also works)
6) Burn

I've been working on this flipping flipper of Seven all weekend long and continue to dance near the issue without solving it.
Here's what I've discovered:
Creating the disc with 2 titlesets (one for each side of the original) will work, except for the title break. When the last chapter from title 1 ends, the disc stops. You then have to manually access title 2.
When the much longer process of using VOBedit to join clips and IFOedit is used to create one titleset, all of the chapters on the second half which match the first half are lost. Therefore, once you hit the last chapter of the first half, you must let the movie play through without skipping forward in order to see the second half of the movie. If you chapter forward, you will skip to the last chapter number from side b was that was used on side a. For example, if Seven has 20 chapters on side A and 21 chapters on side B, for some reason, skipping from the combined chapter 20 to the next chapter results in viewing material that was at the #20 chapter stop on Side B.
I have positively NO idea why this is the case. A review of the IFOs makes everything look correct, so it must be something not being correct in the vob navigation packets.
Getting this close makes me ask the question: How can you manually modify the chapter stops in VOB files? -

If you want to automaticaly play the 2nd titleset after the 1st, do this:
1 Open the VTS_01.0.IFO with IFOEdit > VTS_PGCITI > PGC_1, scroll down to "There is no PGC Command Table"
2 Right click and choose "Add Post Command"
3 Right click on 1.Post Command > edit command
4 Command: (CallSS_VMGM) Call VideoManager PGC, PGC Nr: 2, Resume Cell 1
5 Click Save
Hope this helps

MegaHurts,
I'm saving your note for future reference. I'll try that one soon.
Gizmogajet,
I used TMPGEnc DVD Author as you suggested and damn if it isn't the cat's meow. It let me import both titlesets and create new titlesets out of them, then even better, it let me change my chapter points, and then even best, I could edit out the side breaks. One teeny "imperfection" in the design is that you can't quite do frame-exact editing. The cuts seem to be allowed only on key frames. Still, that means less than half a second of black screen, or only a quarter-second (maximum) of each side trimmed off to get a smooth edit. I went for the smoother edit and seemingly haven't lost anything noticible. 2-3 frames on each side of the break.
I even was able to do some custom menu work on one of the titles I was backing up. There was enough room for the entire main movie AND the deleted scenes. I trimmed out the rest of the features with DVDFab (creating two titlesets, really) then joined them and put in my own menu with a still-frame. Didn't have to bump down the quality at all.
This is the first trialware I've seen in a while that I want to plunk down the dough for. Great suggestion ... thanks.

Question about TMPGEnc DVD Author ... it seems to be removing any subpicture streams when I import VOBs into it. My final outputs have the subtitles removed, which can cause a problem when subtitle streams are used to translate dialog in, for instance, Klingon.
I couldn't find a setting that said anything about what to do with Subtitles on import or export. Is subtitling not a feature in TMPGEnc or am I missing something?
Oh, and Megahurts, thanks again for the info on linking multiple VOBs. I'm finding all kinds of uses for that ... especially when there is no menu to speak of. -
Megahurts,
Can you post instructions for adding a third - nth titleset in the manner you described? I tried to do what seemed logical to me but it failed. I tried renaming the files related to the third titleset with 3, fourth titleset with 4, etc. Then I tried to use ifo edit to link the second titleset to PGC Nr. 3, Cell 1, third titleset to PGC Nr. 4, cell 1, etc., but the final disc isn't recognized by the player or by PowerDVD when I do this.
Oh, and I tried to reauthor these titlesets with TMPGEnc DVD Author and that failed too.
Any ideas?

When you add extra titlesets to a VIDEO_TS folder, the player will not recognize them because the VIDEO_TS.IFO file is not updated. The easiest way to do this is to delete the VIDEO_TS files and with DVDFab, choose 'Create video manager (VIDEO_TS.IFO)'.
You can select each title with the remote or link them with the post command in each VTS.IFO file as above.
Hope this helps,

One very easy way is to use the new Beta5 version of DVDShrink. Simply open both disk titles and drag the desired titles into the reauthor window. This allows you to add multiple titles from multiple DVDs to make a single DVD.
You will probably need to compress the titles to make it fit but Shrink is not called that for nothing!
Take this one step further, Shrink will allow you to edit stop and start points of all titles as well. Now you can make a selective burn of songs from a variety of concerts, for an example. You can lock in the audio track that you want to play so that you can produce a DVD custom to your preferences. No need to go thru stupid menus and FBI screens. The "custom burn" is now easy with Beta5. Beta 4 had a problem with this but it has been fixed.
You can even go back and reauthor copies split on two DVDs made from DVDXCOPY into one DVD!!!!!!!!!!! -
Megahurts (Chas),
Thanks again for the continued help. I actually did link the titlesets and then created the new VIDEO_TS with DVDFab but the disc wouldn't play. (Hence resurrecting this thread). This makes me wonder first off if I set up my VTS.IFO links correctly or not.
I have successfully been able to link VTS_01 to VTS_02 with no prob. However when I add VTS_03 and higher, the disc simply isn't recognized in any player or computer. I added a post command in VTS_02 that went to PGC Nr: 3, Resume Cell 1; then again in VTS_03 that went to PGC Nr: 4, Resume Cell 1; and so on thru VTS_05 (linking to Nr: 6). Is this correct? Or should every post command link to PGC Nr. 2?
Here was my complete process:
1) Rip all discs in file mode using DVDDecrypter
2) Use DVDFab to strip/split the video files I wanted to assemble into seperate folders.
3) Delete all of the VIDEO_TS files in all folders.
4) Rename each of the six sets of video files as *_01 *_02 etc.
5) Dump all of my renamed files into one directory.
6) Edit the post command on each of the VTS*.IFO files to go to the next PGC in the sequence.
7) Create new VIDEO_TS files with DVDFab.
8) Burn using Pinnacle InstantCopy (which always works for me except in this case).
Now, whenever I link only two titlesets using your procedure, it works flawlessly. Whenever I try to link three or more the disc isn't recognized.
Totally bizarre.

P.S. Kensig, whenever I used to try DVDShrink in the past, it used to completely lock my box up (Windows 2k w/ 1.8 GHz and 384 MB Ram) but I'll try the latest version again. If it's successful, I'll post a follow-up.
