when I want to copy one of my dvd-r discs, if I try to do a direct one-to-one copy, by putting the original in my dvd-rom and my blank in my dvd-rw drive, I get a coaster 2-3 times out of 10.

when I rip the disc, then burn a new disc with the ripped files, I never get a coaster (over 350 burns)

obviously, the one-to-one is way faster, more convenient, etc.

is there any advice anybody could give me as to how I can make this problem go away? my computer details can be viewed above.

Your not trying to copy on the fly are you? Are your dvd-rom and dvd-r drives on the same ide channel as master/slave? Create an image of the disc then burn the image to the new disc. Hope some of that may help, if not maybe list more details on process including software & maybe somebody will spot a flaw somewhere.

I am using on the fly and they are on the same channel. Is that the problem?

    my current setup:

    IDE1:

    MasterVD-ROM
    SlaveVD-RW

    IDE2:

    Master:100GB HD

I'm burning with Nero. My specs are above.

you mean to the HD right?

that was similar to the second option i listed that i was trying to avoid for reasons of speed, HD space, convenience.

I know that this topic is for few month ago, however, I am wondering if you got the answer from anywhere else. If you did, I will appreciate it if you share it with me. Thanks.
