I've just tried to extract the audio from a movie, i select full processing mode under audio tab, then click save wav, and i get the above error messgae. The audio is in AC3.

    Can anyone help please?

I can save as a direct stream no problem, but i'm wondering if i will lose sound quality?!?

AC3 codec is installed and works fine!

    thanks in advance

Just do a direct stream copy and then rename the file to .ac3 after it saves, and quality of the AC3 will be fine. You can use headac3he or besweet or whatever to convert the file.

    thx for the reply.

So is the AC3 causing this problem??

I have done divx 2 dvd before with ac3, and works fine by doing full processing mode.

Dont quite understand wot the problem is.

I'm afraid i am not experienced in using the software u have mentioned.

I've just checked the file information of the movie in VD, and under audio compression it states: unknown (tag2000)

That "unknown" audio codec and the warning about not having an audio decompressor is what I've seen every time I've opened an AVI file with AC3 audio. I always just did the direct stream copy and converted to WAV (or directly to MP2) with besweet.

When i extract the wav using direct stream, i find the size of the wav is much smaller compared to full processing.

Wot i did in the end was, used avi2vcd program to decompress the movie file, then i was able to extract the wav in VD by using full processing mode, the movie is now converting. The wav size was 1.4gig.

    Thanks

Goldwave will extract AC3 sound from avi's to wav format. Here's a guide.

That's because it's not a WAV when you do that, VirtualDub just insists on naming it .wav. It's really an AC3 file. If you have a file with MP3 audio and you use "direct stream copy" you'll get an MP3 file named .wav.

I have extracted the wav using goldwave, but its showing as 2 channel stereo Size: 1.4gig). So does that mean i have lost the AC3 suurond sound?
