OK...I've used TMPGEnc to re-encode my film file from an xvid to an MPEG-1 but how can I burn it onto a dvd without it being re-encoded back to MPEG-2?
The point was to be able to fit more onto my dvd+r disc?
Is there a way of doing this, and can it be done using nero? (I don't think my standalone dvd player is ISO compatable, it plays vcds and dvd-r's tho!)
Thanks!![]()

OK, first of all; make sure that the xvid file that encoded to mpeg 1 plays fine and that the sound is intact. Did that xvid have ac3 sound?
Usually, you have to strip out the audio 1st with vitualdub, then encode, and finally remux the sound (wave file) back into the video using TMPGEnc. I'm not sure what you did.
You should have just encoded the file directly to mpeg2 for DVD authoring. This is not doable in the free version of TMPGEnc, you'll need the pay version.
Please post exacly what steps you took and where you are now. Also, what was the file size of the original xvid? I'm assuming it was close to 700MB. Now, what was the size of the resulting mpeg1 that you encoded and did it play OK? Sound? -
The DVD specs allow for mpeg1, audio must be 48khz not 44.1 like for VCD.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
PAL
Video:
Up to 9.8 Mbit/sec MPEG2 or up to 1.856 MBit/sec MPEG1 video
720 x 576 pixels MPEG2
704 x 576 pixels MPEG2
352 x 576 pixels MPEG2 (Same as the CVD Standard)
352 x 288 pixels MPEG2
352 x 288 pixels MPEG1 (Same as the VCD Standard)
25 frames/second
------------------------------------------------------------------------
NTSC (NTSC Film)
Video:
Up to 9.8 Mbit/sec MPEG2 or up to 1.856 MBit/sec MPEG1 video
720 x 480 pixels MPEG2
704 x 480 pixels MPEG2
352 x 480 pixels MPEG2 (Same as the CVD Standard)
352 x 240 pixels MPEG2
352 x 240 pixels MPEG1 (Same as the VCD Standard)
29,97 frames/second
24 frames/second with 3:2 pulldown (NTSC Film, this is only supported by MPEG2 video)
Providing your video is compliant your authoring program should accept it without reencoding. Unless there are some packages that will only accept mpeg2 (this may be a possibility). What are you using to author. I have used Ulead DVD workshop for authoring mpeg1 to DVD with no problems. -
ok.....firstly
I encoded both video and audio...i haven't watched the movie yet, I just assumed it worked, but i'm using dvd+rw's so if anything goes wrong i'm covered....for all my vcd's I use nero express and now for my dvd's I have nerovision express with the mpeg 2 plugin, but when I load the re-encoded mpeg1 to make a dvd nero converts it because it fills up the same amount of disk space as the mpeg2 version of the file -
707,106kb was the original size and the mpeg1 converted file is 1,111,798kb??? how come it bigger?
although when i converted it to mpeg 2 it was huge!

Sounds like NeroVision Express is not a true DVD Author program. I use DVDit PE 2.5 to mix my 352x240 MPEG-1 video with 48k audio into DVD-Video format and use Nero 6.0.0.9 to burn the VIDEO_TS folder. My player can handle 352x240 MPEG-1 embedded VOBs.

I HAVE NERO 5.5.10.35, but its too confusing...thats why I use the express version
