Which way is the preferred way to rip files with DVDDecrypter if you are then going to run them thru DVDShrink.?

I have used DVDShrink, but everything I have read recommends ripping with DVDDecrypter first for better results?

  6. I ripped using both but both had simillar result. I recomend DVD Decrypter for ISO. DVDShrink to weed out unwanted meterial (extras).

    I liked both softwares.

  7. Ripping first with Decrypter gives you two advantages:

    1) It removes RCE encoding, which DVDShrink does not. A minor consideration, since it doesn't affect standalone players, but still a consideration.

    2) It allows you to experiment with different compressions without having to rerip each time. Could be a major factor if you haven't figured out what quality works best for you.

Otherwise DVDShrink does just as good a job at ripping.

    RCE Encoding would be what?

  9. RCE is an encryption scheme developed a few years ago, before personal burners were thought of. Basically it was an attempt (I think it originated on Warner's disks) to keep someone from playing a copied DVD on their computer.

If you have an RCE encoded disk ripped to your harddrive with DVDShrink (which doesn't remove this protection) and attempt to play it, it will say something like "This player incompatible with region". It's not *quite* the same thing as regional protection, but it does share some similarities (DVDShrink will remove region protection). Standalone players ignore this, as it isn't part of the DVD specs.

If you don't care about playing DVDs on your computer it isn't really a factor -- but a DVD with RCE protection won't play on a computer. The author of DVDShrink would love to include RCE removal but because of where he lives (most think Japan) he is unable to get an RCE disk to try this with.

The only RCE disks I own are the Star Trek NG series -- I made the mistake of ripping the first two seasons with DVDShrink without decrypter and consequently I cannot play the backups on my computer (no great loss, but it *irks* me :>) Someday I'll go back and redo them when I get Aroundtoit.
