  1. My settings and environment: SmartRipper 2.41, DVD2AVI 1.77.3, TMPGEnc Plus 2.5, PAL (720 by 576), 16:9, Full screen (keep aspect ratio 2).

The above and the following information applies to numerous movies that I encoded with TMPGEnc, using two different PCs, and various other settings.

Problem: It appears that TMPGEnc has a consistent glitch of slightly shrinking the viewable image while filling the rest with black borders. However, it maintains 720 x 576 and the aspect ratio. The added bulk in borders is clearly seen at the sides of the movie; 10 – 16 pixels in width per side. By contrast, the left and right sides of an original DVD movie expand to the very edges of a computer monitor or TV. It’s as though TMPGEnc is pasting a 704 x 560 viewable image onto a 720 x 576 black background.

Moreover, the video sizes of some original DVDs from the store shelf don’t expand all the way to the edges of a TV or computer monitor (if I remember correctly, two PAL examples are Predator and 12 Monkeys). This irritatingly deepens the TMPGEnc problem.

I would appreciate any help on this matter.

  2. You can use the Clip Frame option instead of the Full Screen options, that way you can cut off any black areas.

  3. I've tried using the "Clip Frame" filter in conjunction with "Full screen (keep aspect ratio 2)" but it had no effect whatsoever.

  5. With a widescreen, letterboxed movie, won't that truncate all my borders along with a large portion of the original video? Or do I use it in conjunction with Clip Frame to specify what to truncate and what to leave?
