  1. I know there are several people on this site that are using dv camcorders and making high quality (S)VCD's and dvd's. I was wondering what cameras you reccomend that are best for the price. I have been searching, but I would prefer people who actually have the camera. Thanks

  3. for high quality footage, I'd recommend going for 3CCD camcorders. Especially now, that the Sony TRV900's price is starting to fall.

You might want to consider the Panasonic ...PV951 (3CCD, Megapixel) also.

I almost bought TRV900, but I saw the almost 'pro' looks of the Canon GL1...bought it!

    ...worth every penny.

  4. I would shop around and have a look for yourself as quality is very subjective. If your intent is to use use the camcorder as say a passthough a 3CCD camcorder would make abolutly no sense. Actually for the common use who is going to be making home movies of the kids or sporting events a 3ccd camera normally isn't required or even wanted. If your going to try to produce some professional work then yeah a 3ccd is good. But then most of the 3ccd cameras are on the large side in size and price.

I'll repeat that if your going to use the camera for an analog passthough you do not need a 3ccd camera.

3ccd cameras do have merits the color on a 3ccd camera in general is better than an 1 ccd camera. I would say for 90% of people a 3 ccd camera would just be a waste of money. BTW the Canon is a nice camera but its HUGE!!!!

I'd say and this is just my opinion that the size of the camera is important, if your like most people large cameras tend to stay at home because ther impractial to carry around. Yeah if your going to a wedding or something your make the effort but if your just going to the park, it could go either way.

Damn this is longer than i would read...... To answer your questions. I have a sony PC9, It works great and i'm happy with the quality of the videos I have taken. The camera stills are suitable for sending to people via email or a small print, but thats about it. Its also small enough to take with me if I go anywhere. One more tip, if your in the US then use an american express card and look into the price match. I picked up my camera from a safe online retailer for 969.00 but priced matched with a questionable retailer with a price of 769.00. Shipping doesn't count.

  5. It may be overkill for many things but my Sony TRV-900 is wonderful. The floppy drive even is handy for stills although I could go solid state media as it has a PCMCIA slot.

I agree if you want just DV passthrough or the "IR/seethrough" effect 3ccd cameras are too expensive or won't work (in that order).

I own a Canon Elura (the old one, the new MC2 is about $1500 US ).
This on has option of shooting the video in progressive scan.
I have been very happy with the camera, excellent quality and has been very reliable, used more than a typical home use since I belong to a club.
I use a Mac G4 iMovie to edit then transfer to a PC for conversion to SVCD (nero 5.5).
