A ripper doesn't convert. For rippers, take a look here: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/decrypters-dvd-rippers - there are user ratings for those. Much better than random posts in this thread, if you're looking for guidance.

  4. Sorry but I have seen rippers that say that they rip from the dvd and make a mpeg and other portable files, as opposed to ripping stright for an absolute copy of the dvd to burn onto. Did you understand what I just said? LOL Not real good at this jargon and all yet, still very new to it all. I have DVD Decrypter, Dameon Tools, Recode 2, and DVD Shrink. I tried using recode and the video came out looking really great but the sound was all off. I have no idea what I did wrong but I am sure it was me since I really have no idea what I am doing. I followed the guide from here for using Recode and I used another guide I had found for using DVD Decrypter. I want to be able to convert them into smaller videos to keep on my external hard drive and then be able to also convert them back into a usuanle thing to burn onto a DVD if necessary. I hope that I explained myself. I just want to be able to do all of this and I am willing to work at it until I get it right. I have no trouble to music CDs but I realize that they are much different. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appareciated.

There are tons (171 actually) of guides written on the subject of DVD to ??? if you look under CONVERT left:
Just make your mind up on what format you want it converted to.
For simple (yet good) DVD to XviD AVI, use DVDFab Decrypter + AutoGK

    You want the impossible.

Converting to "smaller videos" will lose quality, and you could never again turn it back into a DVD like the original.

An all-in-one tool is what would rip and re-convert. Those never work well.
