Are there any cards that do real time rendering / acceleration for Premiere 6.0 or 6.4? If so which ones do you recommend?
Thanks

my order of pref. from best to not as good ..
DPS reality w/ adobe plugin
matrox digisuite
targa 3000
canopus dvrex
media 100 series
targa 2000 DDR / targa 1000
targa 2000 Pro/RTX/DTX/SDX
ReelTime nitro
also somewhat hardware acceleration:
matrox rt-x series
matrox rt2000
mind you - some of these cards and systems they require will cost you more than 10 grand +++ -
So do all these card do all rendering and effects? Some cards I've started investigating like Pinnacle DV500 say they only do certain effects?
Video stuff is a side hobby of mine so I'm not willing to spend $10G though I'd probably spend upwards of $1000...
Or would it be better to just invest in maybe a dual Xeon 2Ghz+ machine?
(Running a P4 2.4ghz now) Would that be a comprable in speed to these card or would they still whip 2 Xeon's ass...
Thanks Again

Some of the entry level Pinnacle do have real time hardware effects, but very limited. Usually only one or two levels of color correction, and maybe a transition or two. With a P4 2.4 the real time effects of those cards aren't really necc, as the P4 can already go those effects in real time (with Avid and Vegas anyway).
For $1000, I'd look into something like a Canopus DVStrom2 http://www.canopus.com/us/products/dvstorm_2/pt_dvstorm_2.asp
Would work great with the CPU you already have, and has more realtime effects than Pinnacle, plus supports hardware DV, Mpeg2 capture, and hardware accelerated Mpeg2 re-encoding.
Matrox offers cards in a similar price range http://shopmatrox.com/usa/products/categories.asp?CategoryID=69&Column=2 -
What are your thoughts on Matrox's RT.X10 card
http://shopmatrox.com/usa/products/datasheet.asp?ID=296
Seems like it supports quite a bit, not quite as much as a DVSTORM2, just wondering if either of you had any experience or comments on the card?
Thanks

not having real time preview seems a little counterproductive as you have that in vegas without a hardware card .
a lot of things with the rtx10 are really software based rendering -- see system spec requirments ..

Card: Matrox RTX.10 $499.95
Real-Time Output: Analog composit & S-Video
NLE Software bundle: Premiere 6.5, Power of X
DVD / CD Authoring: Sonic DVDit! le (FREE DVDit! SE upgrade offer)
Real-Time 3D FX: Page Peels & PIP w/ Excellent keyframing
Real-Time Color Correction: Excellent w/ real-time auto white balance
Real-Time Speed Control: Field based - excellent on fast moving objects
Coolest feature: The most powerful real-time card for under $500!!
Gotcha: Requires a 2.2 Ghz machine to deliver the goods
With the new $499.95 price, the RTX.10 is simply the world's coolest Real-Time solution for under $500. You get Organic Wipes, 3D page peels, 2D & 3D DVEs, Flying PIPs, Speed Control & Color Correction all in real-time. Once you get a chance to play with the real-time keyframer, your productions will never be the same. Having that much power at your fingertips, with no rendering, will have you creating fantastic 3D FX and video sequences.
The RTX.10 is the little brother of the RTX.100 and it utilizes the same "Power of X" technology. This leverages the speed of your computer with Matrox's Flex 3D technology to deliver outstanding real-time performance. You can layer 2 layers of video and graphics together with real-time color correction and speed controls. You can apply 3D FX as filters to graphics and titles.
The RTX.10 includes Matrox outstanding Media capture and export tools. The single pass scan and capture tool is great. It detects each time you stopped and then started your camcorder while you were shooting. You just hit the record button and your video is automatically captured and broken into clips. You can then go in and trim each clip, add annotation and delete the scenes you don't want to free up disk space.
Since this is the little brother of the RTX.100, it does have some limitations. You do not get real-Time DV or MPEG2 output. You can't layer as many FX as with the RTX.100 and you don't get as wide a range of color correction tools. You do get the Auto White balance feature which I really love. The RTX.10 requires a powerful machine to deliver its full complement of real-time features. We do not recommend putting it in anything lower than a P4 2.2 Ghz machine.

When your project exceeds the cards capabilities, what happens? Example I with the RT.X100 card it only does I believe 2-3 layers in RT. If I have a project with say 4-5. Will it go through once then do the rest through the system CPU or does it push it through the card again?
Also a question about the RT.X100 card it says it doesn't do MPEG Re-Editing. Does that mean if I'm making a DVD project and drop in a MPEG file into the timeline it won't render it in RT?
Thanks Again
