  1. Hi there,

what should a hard drive's read and write speed be (MB/s), in order not to encounter dropped frames during capturing -even when capturing uncompressed AVI or Huffy - ?

Using Huffy, I lose one frame per one minute. But that is because of my sound card (SB Live 5.1). If I turn off the option for "Change video clock dynamically to match audio clock", I won't lose any frames. But, of course, if I leave that off, my video will have audio desync occassionally. =|

    Here's my specs...
    AMD Athlon TBird 1.33Ghz
    MSI K7 Master Mobo
    256MB DDR Micron RAM
    GeForce2 MX200
    IBM Desktstar 75GXP 75GB 7200RPM (capture drive)
    Maxtor 80GB 5400RPM
    Windows XP
    VirtualDub v1.4.7
    SB Live! 5.1

IDE hard drives all suffer from the same problem, every now and again they carry out a thermal calibration. However I use IDE 7200RPM Maxtor drives and seem to be very good. I can capture through firewire 15 minutes without dropping frames.

The only way to overcome this is to purchase SCSI AV drives which are very fast indeed at around 30MB persecond, but these are very expensive.

I think you need to bear in mind, if this was a PAL capture you have dropped 2 seconds of footage out of 43 minutes. That is not too bad is it.

  5. I capturing on a i550 with 5400rpm drives. I drop some frames, but if the source file is in sync, I'll frame serve to make a svcd vid.

  6. So you use a firewire also!? I do and would like to trade experiences. My Athlon 850 with a trial Win XP does not seem to do any better than Win ME. The picture if fuzzy/grainy and even jumps a bit. Any suggestions?
