Green, Ghosty, Choppy, Pixelated Playback? Whats up?

Hi everybody,
I just downloaded an AVI clip that uses the Xvid codec. When I play it, there is green all over the screen, the image of the people "smears" over the screen, it is very pixelated, and choppy. The sound however, is great. This is the second time ever that this has happened to me and it took me forever to download this clip. I download video all the time and this almost never happens. Could this just be a bad rip or something wrong with my machine? I have every codec known to man downloaded ( i think) and I just want to know whats going on. Sorry I couldnt describe whats happening too good but Its very hard to describe. If someone would like I could send a small snippet to show what im talking about. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

what are you using for a media player?

I am currently using windows media player 9 i believe, the newest one

i had the problems that you have, but i never found a solution to make them work in WMP... so i download another player i use VideoLAN Client, its not a terrible program but i wish i could have found a way to make it play in WMP... Also consider (i've never done this though) finding a hex editor and changeing a certin line of code search for "fourCC" i think thats it or something of that nature and you should turn up some results

Using that player really made a difference and it looks dvd quality. But now, is there any way I can convert that AVI to MPEG with that quality. I was using TMPEG to convert but it was just converting the same crappy quality.

maybe using virtual dub to frame serve... if you don't know how theres a guide on this site thats very helpful, and you should learn how to do so its helpful later on..

Try a different xvid codec.
I had the same problem until I changed my codec.
Everything I played back was green or pixelated.

1) Try latest XviD codec
if that fails:
2) Try ffdshow (fixed my green screen prob!)
and if still no luck,
3) Use the fourcc changer, and change XVID to DIVX, to let your DivX codec take care of the XviD video.

I *just* figured out the solution to this POS problem

Took me over an hour! I kept on installed the latest Nimo codec pack, v5.0 b build 9.... Keeps on giving me that green smearing stuff.... So, this is what I did to fix it.

Uninstall Nimo codec pack.
re-install Nimo codec pack, using the "Basic" option
Install XVid codec right after it.

The XVid codec that I used was from here: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html

Not sure if that's the latest XVid codec or not, but it worked for me!

Oh, and I forgot: Don't use Nimo (or any other) codec pack. It will break more than it helps.
