  1. Source is 23fps, 480X352,Xvid.
Successfully made a NTSC VCD and SVCD. Both unfortunately have a colour problem.
I live in NEW Zealand and therefore PAL is the standard. So I converted it to PAL.
PAL VCD was great with the colour being correct.
Then tried SVCD PAL for better picture quality. Had jerkiness.
Have tried everything. Read everything I think.
One post said to change the GOP so all were below 3. Another was to change via AVIc100 the XVID to DIVX. Another post was to kept lowering the CBR until the jerkiness stopped. Another was to change the VFAPI plugin settings to accept XVID.
Have tried all, plus combined all ideas. Still jerky on playback.
Why??????? What is the difference between PAL VCD which works and PAL SVCD which doesn't. ( Note: NSTC VCD and SVCD works )
Is it something to do with SVCD frame size being different. One post said to kept lowering the CBR until the jerkiness stoppped. I did keep lowering it until I reached a VCD CBR. Still had jerkiness. That is why I wonder if it has something to do with the frame size.
    Any ideas anyone??????

Are you converting to PAL with virtualdub first?..or are you just using a PAL template in TMPGenc?

  3. Hi, thats for the reply.

    Used virtualDub first.

    Source file was 480X352 23.976fps audio 48000hz 192kbps.
1 Virtualdub...extracted the audio converting to 41000Hz, full processing wav file.
...extracted video, direct stream, converting to 25fps.
2 Converted wav to 25fps using Beesweet.
3 Inserted new wav and avi back into Virtualdub.
4 Cut video in half. .......a/Extracted audio, 1st half. Added filter changing size of video to 480X576. Started frameserver.
and tried ......b/ direct streamed first half with audio and video combined. No frameserver used.
5 Ran TMPGenc. ....a/Turned off wizard. Under video source selected the frameserver file. Created the MPEG-2 file. Then joined this file and the wav creating the PAL SVCD.
and tried ....b/ using wizard adding the combined avi file again creating PAL SVCD.
And as mentioned in my first post I tried various other options. Don't know about template option though.

I make my 23.976fps movies into 25fps as well, because if I leave them in 23.976 they play back jerky....but when I convert them to 25 they play very smooth.

My method is slightly less complex than yours too...and it works for me!

Step 1 is exactly as you describe above.

Step 2 is to use Goldwave's Time Warp function on the audio to make it the same length as the new 25fps video....multiply the exact time in seconds of the original audio by 0.95904 to get the new time in seconds (the ratio of 23.976 to 25)....remember to convert back to hours/minutes/seconds to insert in goldwave though

Step 3 is to just use the audio and video I just created as the input sources in TMPGenc, using the wizard and selecting PAL SVCD using just the default settings (except the bitrate of course which is up to you)....there is NO need to frameserve...and NO need for any of the other settings such as 3:2 pulldown or other crap.

If you've altered the settings of TMPGenc, including the VFAPI settings and you are not sure what they were originally then just delete TMPGenc and reinstall it...do NOT alter the direct show priority...cos this causes horrible jerkiness if set higher.

If you've tried to alter the settings because you're having problems with an Xvid source then the easy way to get TMPGenc to accept Xvid is to use the fourCC changer to fool TMPGenc into thinking its a DivX movie....works all the time for me.

I use this method on EVERY 23.976 movie I download...which is the vast majority of them!....and it works every time.
