    Hi,

I have successfully followed the useful guide here http://www.johnisme.shawbiz.ca/avi.shtml

but was wondering is there a way to retain the small size of the file as saving the sound to a wav and converting with besweet greatly increases its size?

If you plan to keep the file in Xvid/Divx format, I would convert the WAV to a MP3 format.

BTW, Most set top Divx players should be able to play PAL or NTSC Divx/Xvid videos in either format and don't need conversion. If you are converting to a MPEG DVD, then you may need to do framerate/audio conversions.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks for the info and the welcome . I have the original transformers cartoon for my son but it it ntsc. I am playing it through my xbox 360 on the main telly but it skips. I thought it may be the framerate and converting to pal has indeed solved the issue and it plays smoothly Got lots more episodes to do. Can virtualdub put and mp3 back into a video file, I can only see the option for a wav?

Will it be the tv that cannot handle the ntsc 29 fps?

I had assumed most PAL players and TVs could play back NTSC videos, but if you can't your method is one way to make them compatible.

After you open the video in VD, you can load a WAV into VD from the 'Audio' menu>'WAV audio...' I would also install the LAME MP3 ACM codec to give you a few more choices of MP3 audio settings.

If you already have the WAV in there with the video, just select audio 'Full processing mode', then 'Compression'.

With full audio processing, under 'Compression', I select LAME MP3 and use '48000Khz, 192Kbps, CBR Stereo, 16KB/s' most times with LAME. If you don't see those settings, check 'Show all formats' and it will be on the list. But you could check your WAV settings and see what it's using.

Set your video for 'Direct stream copy', and the audio for 'Full processing' then save it out. It doesn't take long as you are just encoding the audio. The file will be much smaller with MP3 audio. Use a different filename if you don't want to overwrite your original video. Then you can check to make sure the sync is correct and then delete the old file.

Besweet probably could also have saved it out as a MP3. The author might have used WAV output for future MPEG conversion or maybe because it's easier to adjust sync with. Don't know.

And I am assuming the Xbox doesn't have a problem with MP3 audio. Not really familiar with it.

I use VD Mod most times myself for conversions as I find the audio handling a bit simpler than VD, so hopefully this isn't all too confusing.

That worked a treat, thanks very much it plays back great although it is noticeably slower the 3 1/2 yr old doesn't mind. I have discovered though that the slower rate ntsc plays back fine, its the faster 29 fps that doesn't.

Some times that's the easy way. VD or VDM are very basic, requiring a fair amount of input to get the desired result. But you also have much more control and that helps to maximize quality and learn how it all works. But if AGK does what you want, that's good.

And what framerate did AutoGK give you back? 23.976fps I'll bet. When you did your conversion you should have done the same (IVTC the thing) and then there would have been no slowdown. In fact, there would have been a slight speedup to PAL framerate.

Wah? Explain? the 29 fps ntsc originated from 24 fps?

If it was shot on film it did. Movies, like the ones in movie theaters, play at 24fps. For NTSC DVD they're required to output at interlaced 29.97fps. If you want to convert to PAL, you should make sure you're using the 23.976fps source, rather than the telecined 29.97fps output.

I ask again; what framerate did AutoGK make it? If you don't know, either open the AVI in VDub(Mod) and go File->File Information, or open the AVI in GSpot to find out.

AutoGK churned out the same frame rate 29fps, but the interleaves says 2 vid frames as opposed to 1 and the 528x400 and irt was x 384.

  13. Hi-

29.97fps, eh? I have a little trouble believing it was created at 29.97fps. If you'd like to pursue it further, I'd like to see the log for that encode, and a small 10 second piece of the source VOB. But I can understand if you're happy with the AutoGK encode and it plays fine on your player, that you may not wish to go to the trouble.

All my AVIs say 1 vid frame, and I don't know if or how having it be 2 vid frames would make it play more smoothly on your player. I suspect that the reason for smooth playing after using AutoGK is for some other reason. But I was wrong about the framerate and I could be wrong about that as well.

No problem with the log, the source was not a vob. Probably originally.

  15. OK, thanks for the log. I can't learn much if the source was just another AVI. As long as what you did worked for you, that's the main thing.
