i captured a video 10/12 years old with the audio dub at 20fps using divx 4 compression. The result was fairly grainy. what i'm trying to achieve is the same quality as the video. should i be using no compression or what other tips can be suggested re sizing or whatever ta.

Are you capturing at you highest resolution possible?

done at 320 x 240 pal. when i try to go larger (and what size should I use) i get an error message 418 unsupported, any idea why.

If your source is PAL, capture at full PAL resolution (720x576) and 25 fps. Capture using a low compression codec (huffuv, PicVideo Mjpeg @ Q 19/20) and convert to DivX or whatever you want to only afterwards.
