  1. i captured a video 10/12 years old with the audio dub at 20fps using divx 4 compression. The result was fairly grainy. what i'm trying to achieve is the same quality as the video. should i be using no compression or what other tips can be suggested re sizing or whatever ta.

It might help a whole lot if you used no compression.

Sounds like you have a Bt848 based capture card. You have to turn overlay mode off in order to be able to capture any higher than 352x288 resolutions in VirtualDub. Even better, turn even the Preview mode off (and capture blindfolded), CPU usage is much lower.

If your source is PAL, capture at full PAL resolution (720x576) and 25 fps. Capture using a low compression codec (huffuv, PicVideo Mjpeg @ Q 19/20) and convert to DivX or whatever you want to only afterwards.
