  1. Is there anyway of determining the correct field order before encoding a movie when going from DVD to SVCD?

  2. All NTSC 4:3 TV's are field A,if you have a Progressive HDTV and DVD player then encode the video in progressive/de-interlace.Some programs such as Videostudio will show the order in Properties.

MOVIEGEEK: I am unaware of tv's having any set field order, its in the source where the field order varies. A tv should, and can, play a movie encoded in either field order, the important thing is to set the output field order the same as the source was. If you simply encoded everything field A and played it on an NTSC tv then you would surely run into problems eventually, depending on which types of sources you are using.

Bitrate viewer can check the field order but its not always accurate. The easiest way to tell for sure is to use TMPGenc. Load the source and on the advanced tab double-click on the deinterlace filter. Set the filter to even-odd field (field) and then scroll through your movie frame by frame. If everythign looks ok then your field order is set correctly. If it jumps backwards every once in a while or if the black bars appear to shift up and down then the field order is incorect. Go back to the advanced tab, change it, and recheck.

If you are authoring a VCD or a progressive SVCD it doesnt matter what field order you set because there are no fields, I'm sure you knew this but I just thought it was worth mentioning.

  4. adam,
I do not doubt what you are saying but I encode all my DVD's and VCD's in field order A and never had a problem.
    Maybe I'm just lucky.

Can you change the field order without re-ecoding. In other words let's say hypothetically you encode with wrong order. Do I have to re-encode the whole movie, or like in a DVD change the display with IFOEdit, can I change the order? Just curious.
