  1. Have been editing my first few DVD's ... not burned any to disc yet.

    Looking at properties (Sony Vegas)
I need to decide on Field order.

I know my TV/DVD is set up for progressive scan playback, so do I need to select this ... would it still be playable on standard DVD /TV combinations.

For example if I play a commercial DVD on my home system it plays back in Progressive Scan mode ... but same disc also pays OK in a standard DVD/TV setup.

What do I set to allow compatibility.

  2. If your source is interlaced and you are not deinterlacing you need to use the correct field order. The wrong field order will result in very fast-jerky playback -- 25 two steps forward, one step back jerks per second.

  3. It depend from video nature - You can check what kind of video You have by "restream" (tool to show and to change some settings in MPEG-2 raw video elementary stream WITHOUT recoding)

  4. I believe ReStream will only tell you how it's encoded. Not whether the frames really contain interlaced field pairs.

  5. I have not encoded the file yet ... just captured as DVAVi and edited ... how do I know what I should set it to ?

I took a look with Mediinfo at the file I have now .. it's:
    ID : 0
    Format : Digital Video
    Codec ID : dvsd
    Codec ID/Hint : Sony
    Duration : 30mn 42s
    Bit rate mode : Constant
    Bit rate : 24.4 Mbps
    Width : 720 pixels
    Height : 576 pixels
    Display aspect ratio : 5:4
Original display aspect ratio : 4:3
    Frame rate mode : Constant
    Frame rate : 25.000 fps
    Standard : PAL
    Resolution : 8 bits
    Colorimetry : 4:2:0
    Scan type : Interlaced
    Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 2.357
    Stream size : 6.18 GiB (95%)

So it looks like it 'is' interlaced.

Still not sure what this means I have to do

  6. DV from a camcorder will always be bottom field first (I think Sony uses the terms lower and upper rather than bottom and top).

But it is important to know how it is encoded (chroma sampling scheme is different for progressive and interlace) - if it is encoded as a interlace then we need to keep this as a interlace even if this is pure progressive video.

Restream allow to quickly change TFF vs BFF so wrong field order can be corrected in limited way.

You can try GSpot (free), load your file in and it will tell you if it is TFF or BFF order.

Restream doesn't analyze. It might try to suggest pre-populated setting based off this opened file, but that's it

If the source is DV-AVI, use these settings.

    Lower (or bottom) field first
    720x576i
    25 fps
use high average bit rate (>8000kbps) for hand held camcorder material.

The DVD player will do the deinterlace if set to progressive.

If the DVD player is set to interlace, the HDTV will deinterlace. Try it both ways.
