  1. I am trying to do this with two .asx files and a few WMV files. I want to rename them to .asf extentions, but cannot figure out how. I have tried to right-click the file, then add .asf to it, but that does not work. Help please.

I don't want to appear snob by saying that, but you don't rename a file into .asf and expect it to become one. If so, we wouldn't be wasting time encoding .avi files into .mpg. We would rename them .

This is where encoders come into play. They take a file in one format and encode them into another.

For your .asf files, you need Windows Media encoder (version 7 is versatile and compatible enough with players). Another tool you should consider is ASFTools version 3. Media encoder encodes .avi files into .asf or .wmv and ASFTools convert between the various microsoft streaming formats and also decode them into .avi if you need so.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. To change file extensions in Windows, you need to enable the extension viewer. To do this in WinXP/2K [and probably 9x as well (havn't worked with 9x in quite a while)], open up a folder somehwere and then click on Tools | Folder Options | View. Once you've done all that, look for an option called "Hide extensions for known file types" and un-check it. Once you do that, you should be able to rename the extension the way you were describing before.

if it has the .asx extension, just rename it to .asf. anything else is not asf. you CANNOT just rename it to asf and hope it becomes an asf file. you have to encode.

  5. What's the difference between wmv and asf?

asx files are playlists. try using asfrecorder to save the stream if the playlist points to something online.

  6. natural mystic,
ASF is just an another name for WMV.
All you do is right-click on .asf file and choose "Rename"or "Properties"(of course you have to un-hide extensions in Explorer,Tools,Folder Options,View).
