We are using win xp sp3 and are unable to boot up because a file in system32 is mispelled. we can't get to the file because windows is using the ntfs file system. Is there any way to get to the file using some external method?

If you have a floppy drive you can use a boot disk and access the hdd using dos and rename the file.

A Linux or Mac OSX computer can read an NTFS file as can any Windows XP or later machine.

For a boot floppy to work, you would need an NTFS reader. A Windows or Linux live Cd would work.
However, filenames for Windows System files just do not get misspelled. Either some human deliberately altered the filename, or you have a virus which needs removing.
