Try going to Control Panel/Sounds/Audio and look at the Recording Level. If the "Line In" isn't checked .... (or Mic if that's what you're using) you won't get any sound. Check it before each capture ..... because if it's like my setup it keeps getting turned off.

If you could post a screenshot of the white box in the middle of the video you are talking about. Also, what codec are you using when you capture the video in VirtualDub?

You should be capturing uncompressed audio and Huffy compressed video.

You can follow this guide (https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/89899.php) but instead of using the PicVideo MJPEG use Huffy

  5. Here is my setup.

    P4 2.53ghz 512ddr pc2700 gainward grforce4 ti4200 with video capture.

first off this is my first time trying to capture video. would appreciate any good device as like what program setup etc works best. I'll try and post later with the withe box in the video. It does it in every program I have used so I figured it is something in my settings somewhere.

djmattyb what do you mean by what codec are you usuing in virtual dub. Do you need an extrenal codec along with virtual dub?

  6. Virtualdub can capture AVI using different codecs. Huffy, MJPEG, Divx are all codecs. These codecs allow for the video to be compressed so that a smaller file is created. There are also audio codecs. Under Video > Compression ?, you can select what codec you would like to use.

Huffy is the codec I prefer; it gives me the best video but still with a pretty big file size. Some prefer divx; divx really compresses the file size. I'd suggest you check out a Virtualdub tutorial site, Luke's site; there is a link to it from the Other>Links menu on this site; if you would like to learn more.

It's all very well suggesting huffyuv but whilst the guy has a decent processor he only has one hard drive, and that's his primary.
I would like to meet anyone who uses huffyuv and captures to his primary hdd with good results.
I capture with the PicVideo mjpeg codec at quality 19 and output to TMPGEnc, encode around the 4500 VBR mark for a 2 hour movie and burn to a dvd-r.
This setting/codec produces a file size of a third compared to huffyuv/mjpeg quality 20 and there is no noticable difference.
A 2 hour movie will produce a file size of around 120gb (a series of tests for me produced a file size of 960mb per minute using huffyuv) so if this is the guy's intention he has insufficient storage space.
It's also worth pointing out the whilst huffyuv is free, PicVideo mjpeg is not (not unless you want the watermark on all your captures).
You really need to check this out, it's your first step when trying to capture:

I'd suggest adding the volume control icon to your taskbar (near the clock).
That way you can simply double-click it and check the line-in box, rather than go to control panel each time
