Hello,
Super new to this whole thing. I'm trying to make video for family member's birthday party. I may be in over my head but I've gotta make this work.
I'm currently trying to capture old VHS tapes and edit them down to a small clip. I'm using virtualDub to capture with Roxio's usb device. I've had to make several changes to get sound and picture working but whenever I start playback the video is skipping ever couple of frames. Here's what I've tried so far....
Update video card - System is up to date.
Ran a defrag but that didn't fix it.
i've also tried changing FPS but to no avail.
I downloaded a codec pack lite but I have no clue how to use it. Also I am using a Windows XP.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

To get smooth capture and playback you need to use a fast compression codec. Install HuffYUV (if you haven't already) and use that while capturing. Set the capture device to capture as YUY2. When you capture VirtualDub should report zero (or very near there) frames dropped or inserted. Capture the audio but don't use any compression. It may help to disable audio playback while capturing.

I'm trying to download HuffYUV but I cant find the huffyuv.inf . Everytime I download it and extract the files the only one I see is huffyuv.dll. Witch does nothing for me. I can't seem to get it into virtualdub. I've been following huffyuv's install instructions but without being about to find huffyuv.inf I can't do anything. What am I doing wrong here?

The version at videohelp includes the inf file:
http://download3.videohelp.com/huffyuv-2.1.1.zip
If you're running 64 bit Windows you'll need a 64 bit version of huffyuv and 64 bit VirtualDub. Or you can use 32 bit VirtualDub and a 32 bit version of Huffyuv. You'll need a special installation procedure though. Similar to this:

Its gone.
I'm running 32-bit and I don't think I downloaded 64 virtualdub
OK the capture device is at YUY2. I was able to find and install HuffYUV and select it in compression. But I'm still having the same problem. Its skipping only every few frames. Odd thing is that the audio is still synced with the video even though it seems like its dropping frames.
Thanks for your help so far!!! -
Any other Idea's how to get ride of this skipping problem? I'm so close to having this work after a long fight

Open the video you captured with VirtualDub and step through it frame by frame (use the left and right arrow keys). Do you see duplicate frames? Missing frames?
-
there's settings in virtualdub to drop frames to keep in sync, try playing with those settings.
-
Yes, under Capture -> Timing... try the different Resync Mode settings. Often "Do not resync..." works best.
Also, capture to a drive that's not your boot drive. And try all the recommendations here:

1st I checked a captured VHS clip for frames. No duplicate frames. It runs nicely for 7 frames then it skips/drops 11 frames. Went through the whole clip (~1.5mins) and its consistent with that pattern.
Also went into Resync Mode I believe I tried ever combination of settings and its still happening
Went through this stickey's 1st post and checked out alot of the thread
My Primary IDE Channel Device is set to mutli-word DMA I'm assuming thats ok since that thread suggests ultra-DMA or just DMA.
I constantly see people taking about dropped frames on VHS and other poor source. But I'm using a VCR/DVD, its happing to DVDs too and I'm mainly using the dvd to see if I've it's solved.
For fun I tried my home dvd player into virtualdub and its the same problem.
I don't currently have a drive to capture to. Going to pick one up soon.
I've been keeping and eye on my CPU Usage from the start and it never gets very high.
Running another defrag right now.
Is there any sense to unistall/install virtualdub? Should I install a MJPEG codec?
What should I have my fps set at? 30? Ive changed it so much I'm not sure what works best or is proper. -
The frame rate should be set to your native frame rate determined by your TV standard. If it's PAL, it should be 25,
or 29.97 for NTSC.
Multi word DMA is no good for capture, you need UDMA - they are not the same. -
Thanks
Trying to figure out how to set that up. I'm assuming HP's site but I cant find anything. Am I S.O.L.? can that not be updated/install -
Try it:
Virtualdub => Capture Mode => Configure all tabs VIDEO + AUDIO + Capture (Disk I/O use 12Mb x 24) =>Video tab, select NO DISPLAY => Record now.
On some Pcs its will work perfect. No frame drop or inserted. Test and reply.
Ps: (Roxio capture?? OMG lots of problem)...Try it: Save your money with Roxio USB capture

It's hard to say, you haven't given any specs of your HW (cpu, ram, OS, etc, etc)
Unless your PC is more than 15 years old UDMA should be available.
We're not mind readers. -

Ive got it down to only dropping 72 frames out of ~700. Its almost tolerable...

For NB enable HIGH PROFILE in energy manager.[/QUOTE]
Sorry not sure what "NB" is.
Still working with the settings in the tutorial -

You can try VH CAPTURE software to this. Look here:
