Please, please, please could somebody spare a few minutes to just give me simple instructions for making a dvd from an avi file???
Do I need to use Tmpegenc and Virtualdub first or can I just make it straight from a package like Dvd Movie Factory or Dvd Workshop?

you don't need vdub.
use tmpgenc to make a dvd compliant mpeg2 file from the avi source. (use the newbie guides for this if you don't understand me)
a package like ulead whatever will then accept the mpeg2 file to burn. -
if your avi has sound, it will appear as the video AND audio source when you select it as the video source at the beginning of the tmpgenc wizard
